Normal operating idle RPM?

Hi everyone,

Q1:I was wondering what is the normal operating idle RPM, FWD gear idle RPM, REV idle RPM for a 120 Force outboard?

Q2: Is it true that "the rule of thumb" for adjusting the proper idle is that you screw in the idle screw on the carburator until feeling resistance, then unscrewing 1 1/2 turns back and that should be the optimal idle.

Thanx

Re: Normal operating idle RPM?

in gear idle should be about 800

the idle mixture screw adjust the air to fuel mixture, there is one on each carb, 1.5 turns out is only a starting point - to get the engine running, so you can properly tune it. Too lean on any of the carbs and it will burn up. Actual idle speed is set with the throttle return stop after the carbs are set.

Thanx for the info! Could you please elaborate more on the subject matter "Actual idle speed is set with the throttle return stop after the carbs are set" Not sure where to start on this one?

At the base of the Throttle Linkage tower that goes between the linkage on both carbs, there is a screw with a lock nut on it. Loosen that nut and turn clockwise to raise idle and counter clockwise to lower idle.

The screws on the front/side are air screws. They are set at 1 and 1/8 turn out.Idle in gear should be about 750-800 rpm.J
