No gear lube in lower unit. know what do i do

Checked gear lube in a old 1963 merc 300 30 hp. and it has none in it. What should i do this is my first boat. When i had motor running in a garbage can i did notice a small amount of oil substance in the water. Could i have a bad prop seal or could it be much worse? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There could be many seals combined to be causing the problem. I suggest you start with the Brg carrier and seal it. Then pressure test the case, and move on from there. I would not be surprised if the driveshaft is rusted below the waterpump where the driveshaft seal rides.<br /><br />TMD
