Does anyone know the VOLTAGE of the following:
1) Output from exciter coil - I have 16vac
2) Input to coil from CD - I have 15vdc

There is no spark at plug, so I'm thinking the coil is broken.

Thanks

The Factory service manual, available at any dealer, uses ohm meter readings (not volt meter readings) to check ignition components.

I know, but I wanted the volt readings to check this when I crank the engine, as my spark is very small or none.

I have 6500ohms at the ignition coil...the manual says 4400ohms....does this mean mine is on the way out? Do ignition parts generally work or not; or can they slowly deteriorate?

Coils will "drift" in value depending on ambient temperature. There's also a pretty wide tolerance to the values during manufacture, and accuracy of the test meter is always a factor. Yes, reactive components (coils and caps) can/will deteriorate over time, but we're talking 20 years of normal use. Your reading sounds like it's within tolerance.

Re: Nissan 5hp 4stroke Ignition

Does anyone have voltage values while the engine is running?

Exciter coil - 220Vac
Ignition coil primary input - 15mVdc (seems very low to me)

Thanks

Plain digital multimeter. What should the input voltage be from the CD unit to the coil? Yellow/black wire , if I remember correctly?

You have to use an analog meter and you need a service manual for the values.

Yes, should be analog, and (ideally) should be equipped with a dva section -- unless you has access to an oscilloscope. Digital meters will be way too erratic, as they try to "lock" onto the signal.
