Hi,

I just bought a 2009 fm165 with a 4stroke 60hp elpt mercury on it; the dealer put a Black Max 10 3/8 R 13P on it. It peaks at 31mph at 5800rpm wot, but very slow to get there and very slow to get on plane, the more weight the slower to plane out, and nose goes way up almost have to stand up to see over the bow, looked at Mercury?s web site, they recommend a Black Max 10 5/8 R 12P for best all around, hole shot and top speed. Any thoughts, mostly for fishing but my kids want to tube behind it also.

Thanks,

Is that a standard 60 or the bigfoot 60? reason i asked is that they have different gear ratios. The WOT rpms seem pretty good, are you starting out with the motor trimmed down and gradually trimming up as you get up on plane?

It is a standard non Bigfoot 60hp, trim all the way down then adjusting up as it starts to sloowwlly plane out. I talked to my dealer today and they are ordering me a BlackMax 10 5/8 12p, I'll see how that works.

Average load is 700lbs of people, coolers, and misc gear; also I am kind of a stickler for a full fuel tank, that will probably change after I get used to the boat and figure out its fuel economy and range.

again
Thanks

Can you define "very slow" in seconds? What is the max rated rpm for the motor. What is the max rated hp for the boat?Is 31 @ 5,800 with one aboard or typical load? The 12 will put you close to 6,200.
Is the antivent(cavitation) plate even with the bottom od the boat?

By slow at least 15 seconds to get up on plane with 450 lbs of people, cooler and gear. Max Rpm for motor is 6000 if I read the Tag right and is what is shown in mercurys specs, max Hp for the boat is 75. I believe the cavitation plate is even with the bottom of the boat. With the 700lbs of people and gear I quit counting before it planed out, ran at 28mph (GPS) at 5500rpm when it finally did though. Usually does best with trim a quarter up on the gauge, not sure if that has any uniform value to it.

The 12 should improve your hole shot a little and put you at about 6,000.
Do you trim in for hole shot.Is gas, battery and gear in the stern?
You might want to check out Smarttabs. trim tabs, reasonable, easy to install
better hole shot, stay on plane with less power, and reduce no wake speed wander. Not that outboards usually have this.

I usually have the trim all the way down to start then slowly start trimming up as I build speed, I think the fuel tank is centered on the boat and have been moving gear forward also try to put the heavier passenger more forward.

Kinda a engine question, do they need to warm up? Or are they ready to go as soon as you start it ('07 EFI Mercury 60hp). Seems to get a little quicker after I have been on the water a little while.

Even though it is a new setup you might check that the throttle is opening all the way.4 strokes do need a careful setup for effective hole shot.
The height of the motor is important.
The antivent plate (just above the prop) even with the bottom is considered a starting point.Usually end up as much as an inch higher.Raise it a hole at a time and test.Be sure it pumps water.Set as high as possible without
ventilating problems(some call cavitation)

Re: newby with a lowe fm 165 prop?????s

I put on my new 12"p prop, but I think I might have found some of my problem, in doing so. When I took of the old prop, the not almost felt loose like it had not been torqued down to the 55lb specification. Would that cause excessive slip, and cause the engine rev like it is supposed to yet not spin the prop enough to actually get the proper performance.

I am going to try to get out tommorow and see how the 12P works;).

Thanks

I got out today with the new 12P prop, torqued to 55lb, what a difference got right up on plane 32mph Gps at 5900 rpm, 29mph at 5500rpm.

:DVery happy:D

would still raise motor up a hole and see this always makes for better peformance and speed (less drag). i do it to all the boats i get even new glad you fixed the hole shot problem

I agree; I've seen tests where a boat of moderate speed 35-40 gains almost 2 mph just by raising the motor.
