Newbie with 76 holiday

I just picked up a 76 holiday with the 140 mercruiser. Previous owner hacked out the enclosed bow to make it a mock super sport.

Started the demo today. So many drywall screws.

Motor ran rough last time they used it, I’m hoping I just need to clean carb and tune engine. Trim just clicks. Looks like I have a lot of troubleshooting in my future. Been reading a lot of the threads here and am feeling inspired. I’m looking at doing orange paint and possibly polishing the rest. I like the orange in the picture and love how polished aluminum looks. I know it’s gonna be more maintenance but love the look

I'm a polishing U alum. I'm glad that I did it and I'm glad that it's done b/c it was no walk in the park. Hopefully your starting aluminum is in better shape than mine (full of corroded micropits)...regardless, you'll be cursing those faux lapstrakes.

You have what we'd refer to as a "bowectomy"...some are done really well where one would struggle to determine whether or not it's factory.

Welcome aboard, good on you for taking on the challenge of a 45 year old tin boat. It's a good deal that they they upgraded to the 3.0L 4 banger over the old original 2.5L. In a light Holly/SS that 140 MC will move pretty good.

I just finished going through you 75 SS build. I am very impressed with all the rivet work and that polished look is amazing. Did you seal it with a clear coat after polishing?

Thanks! No clear...I doubt that it would adhere. I used the Zephyr polish/sealer on the sides & Sharkhyde on the bottom. I bet a heavy wax could be used as well; I recall @astor using Collinite.

my rig had alot of fatigue damage so I really had no choice. The spray rail patches that required removing/replacing the double-seam rivets was probably overkill. The vertical risers with the wide plates (along with fiberglass-reinforced sidepanel) should provide plenty of support IMO.

I think what's also important is a well-supported hull when trailering. I believe a significant amount of damage came from little roller bunks being so far away from the outer chine...coupled with the fact that the P.O. secured the hull to the trailer by throwing a big strap over the gunnels and wrenching it down.

making progress. Two layers of plywood and all of it pretty rotten. Styrofoam was soaked and heavy.

Great project! The finish work of the PO’s bow mods were maybe a little rough in the finish but not horrible. Looks like you have some solid stuff to work with.
you don’t have the rib end braces, you might consider looking at the other resto-mod threads here to consider adding? Now is the time to do it. Watching this thread with interest

Now that I have the floor out and all the foam out do I strip the paint before I do a leak test on the rivets ?

I’d say strip the paint first in case heavy coating of a repaint is actually preventing the rivet to leak.

This is probably a dumb question, but do I have to pull the motor and flip it to do the bottom (strip the paint) or can I make a cradle to set it in?

Flip it is easiest, but a cradle works, especially if you don’t wish to pull the motor. Sling cradles are especially handy because you can angle the boat up side to side so you don’t have to roll around on a creeper.

Oh man paint striping is the worst and doing it upside down on your back makes it almost unbearable. You can have the motor pulled in an hour. From your pics it looks to me like that is the original white washed transom and the front motor mount is original too. Both really should be replaced.

Ok. I have another weird question, due to the lumber prices being stupid ridiculous I really can’t afford to pay these prices for plywood at the moment. I have a lot of 3/4” cedar fence boards. Would I be able to edge join them and use them to make my floor?

The flooring also acts as structural. Don't think edge cedar board would do what you want.
