I decided to take the big plunge and buy my first boat. Would like to ask the forum for advice.
I'm a fisherman so I will be getting a 17' aluminum tunnelhull boat to get up in the shallows. Will be in saltwater almost exclusively.
From what I've learned I'll need an outboard from 50HP up to around 75HP.
I want to go with a 4 stroke.
I have heard good things about the Yamaha and Honda engines. What are your opinions on these?
It will have a stainless prop and probably be on a jack plate.
Please feel free to e-mail me off forum.
Thanks for looking.

Look at the Mercury engines too...they have very good power to weight ratios in this range and they are AMERICAN MADE.

they are both good eng.but always try to get the max hp.for your boat.that way when you have all your gear, and fishing pals with you you are not under power.personaly i like 2stroke better than 4
stroke better hole shot.

When lookin at a new motor check out the engine displacement. you cant beat cubes!! The Yam 70 HP is smaller than the merc 40 3 Cyl, say no more!!

Howdy, Moonpie.

In that power range the best values in a 4 stroke are the Merc 50 and 60EFI and the Johnson/Suzuki 50, 60 and 70EFI.

EFI is worth every penny of the extra weight and cost. Those are the choices for EFI 4 strokes.

I have a Suzuki DF70 EFI on my 17' Boston Whaler and am very pleased with it.

Good luck. :)
