Picked up a new to me 16 SS, she needs a little attention but should do what I wanted her for. I need to do a little wood work, but should be usable. I should have checked the lower unit oil before purchase, do to milky oil. Did vacuum test and pressure test and found no leaks.:happy:I dont plan on a total rebuild yet but maybe later. Not a bad one, Mich. You're number two or three popping in today with a new tinny. The drydock is getting crowded, we'll have to shove some glassers off the end into the drink.

If the LU held pressure and vacuum, it might be the washers on the drain/vent screws. A cheap fix if that's it. Welcome to the TinHouse and have fun. :D

Re: New tin 16 SS

She is a 82', motor is also a 82' Thx for the compliments. Seems like the more work I do, the more I find that needs to be done. Hopefully I will have her out next week for a splash. (There was still to much ice to splash it yet)

Re: New tin 16 SS

Just curious, why do they rivet the floors in place instead of screwing them in? When I do my bow deck, I was going to screw it in place. Then when and if I have to actually do the floor, I could easily remove it.

Re: New tin 16 SS

Screws can back out, and unless the screws are aluminum (weak) or stainless (expensive) they'll rust or cause dis-similar metal corrosion.

Rivets are CHEAP & on a production line quick & EASY to install...........

Use rivets, and learn to carefully drill the heads off... You'll likely have a good bit of practice while disassembling her this go around, so when you need to remove the deck for something, it'll be 2nd nature.

When you put it back together, what's the plan for the flooring? Carpet~vinyl~paint?

Re: New tin 16 SS

There are varying opinions on Rivets vs screws for the decks. Generally speaking what JB said is correct I know Ezombee put screws in his and has been running his that way for 3 years.

I know on the bow deck of my 18' and 16'SS I pulled screws out of each of them. I would hold off on that floor as long as possible 80's models have pour in flotation foam and it is probably the hardest thing I have dealt with in both rebuilds.

Agreed, nice looking rig. The bay and/or running the river after a few eyes.....good boat for that. Seems there are several of us on there not to awful far apart.

Re: New tin 16 SS

Planning on paint for the frt deck right now (that idea may change to carpet and will probably go to vinylif I do the floor). Was going to set up some storage on each side and a access door in the frt center for a battery for bow mount trolling motor.
I mainly plan on using the boat for near shore trolling for eye's and salmon/trout when just 2 of us or by myself.

Nice looking SS. Nice to see another 82 model on here. I like the blue stripes better than the brown mine sports.
Here is ours the day we picked her up last fall.

Lots of great Starcraft restorers here. Welcome to the Starmada.

Re: New tin 16 SS

Where do most people put batteries in these for a bow mount trolling motor? (Dont really want a huge debate like Jas)

Re: New tin 16 SS

If I were installing a troller I would build a hatch under the front bow support so that it slid away nice and pretty, if you choose to do that make sure you put the battery in a battery box, I'd hate to see what would happen should a big wave hit and both post jump up and hit the hull.

Re: New tin 16 SS

Welcome to the Starmada In SS's I have put Bow/Mount T/M's on I cut an access hatch in the port side bow seat just in front of the consul. There is just enough room for a group 27 battery under there and it allows you to run the wires under the bow deck to the bow. It also moves the weight of the battery back a little to help with weight and balance, plus it won't get beat so bad in real rough water.

Shoot you guys (Mich & Willy) gotta be close! Jas too. Im a tad south....I will be up that way right after father's day for some eyes tho.

How close is near shore trolling? And how far out are you comfortable taking this boat? If you had to guess...considering weather/rough water.

Good idea on storage/troller battery up front.

Re: New tin 16 SS

My idea of near shore trolling is within 2 miles on Huron and Michigan. On the Bay I would probably go out 12-15 miles max. Most of my Bay fishing is within 5 miles.

What length trolling motor shaft do I need for this boat?
