Hello to all, having a hard time figuring out how long the steering cable is on my 1998 bayliner trophy 2352. The cable is frozen and must be replaced. Do not want to pull old one out until i have the new one to fish in behind as i pull it out. If any one out there has the knowledge i am seeking it would greatly be appreciated. Thank in advance.

Re: New steering cable.

What I did. I did not know the info was stenciled on the old cable and probably couldn't see the info anyway. When I pulled out the old cable, I pulled a pull wire in behind it. After I got the old cable out, I could see the info on the cable and ordered accordingly. Used the pull wire to pull in the new cable and all was great. I had to pull the motor to get clearance on the cable bend. I made a pull device from three short pieces of chain and some grade 8 bolts then used my tractor bucket to do the lift. This is a 2 person job so get help!!

Re: New steering cable.

yes the old cable should have the part number on it with the last two numbers being the length. there is a place maybe on iboats that show how to measure for a cable but i did that just trying it and actually measured for a 17 ft cable when in reality i had a 16 ft cable.. but i tied a length of 3/8 rope to the end that goes thru the tilt tube and pulled from the helm end.. easy peasy and i never worked on a boat before.. i did have to remove my engine (outboard) so i picked it up using a engine hoist aka cherry picker.. i lifted a couple inches slid motor to far port side of transom and cable came right out.. cleaned tilt tube with brake parts cleaner and fished a rag thru it to wipe it out greased new cable end and pushed thru tightened the silver nut and slid engine back down and rebolted... a piece of advice when ordering new cable buy the kit that comes with new helm assembly it is only a few maybe 20 dollars more than the cable alone but about 70 if purchased seperately.. and if its a rotary helm it will be easier to get the new updated kit that is quick connect.. so helm and cabe have to be replaced.. in my case my cable was frozen up AND my helm had a bad tooth on the rotary gear..

Thanks for the responses. I will check to see if I can find some numbers on old cable again. Boat has an I/O. No need to pull motor

Unlike a normal wire you try to pull through the boat's rigging tube, the steering cable is pretty damn stiff - you can almost push it all the way through without pulling. The pull cord is only needed to guide the new cable. Don't be afraid to take the old one out, just make sure you have a string or wire attached. Pull it out from the front towards the rear.

Last one I did I couldn't find any numbers, but once out I was able to locate them.

Re: New steering cable.

mine were at the stern end of the cable about a foot back inside the transom... but pull new cable from helm towards stern... you dont want to mess up the helm end of the cable as its almost impossible to mar up the outdrive end of the cable... its about an hour and a half job or was for me and i have an outboard so i had to remove my engine.... best of luck you CAN do it and we can help...
