New shift cable won't shift out of neutral easily

I just replaced my shift cable (among other things) and it is shifting very hard out of gear back into neutral. I performed the setup (6" exactly) but coming out of forward or reverse I have to go almost to the opposite gear to get it out of gear and sometimes is just shifts to fwd from reverse, or vice versa. Thoughts?

Oh yeah, just installed an AC Delco Voyager dizzy which changed the shift interrupt to a positive input vs. ground. Don't know if it's the cable or shift interrupt because I did the cable and dizzy both before I got the boat back into the water to test them.

Sounds like the shift interrupter switch is not working. Check the adjustment and can place a test light on the distributor side of the switch to see if light turns off when trying to shift

I noticed that the Y is moving on the trailer when shifting into forward gear, and know that it shouldn't, so I will adjust the upper shift cable tomorrow and see if that corrects the problem. I'll also recheck the lower shift cable and slotted pin setting as well. I'll test the switch as well for continuity, etc.
One note: the voyager system uses a + and not a negative interrupt to the new dizzy, so your comment should've read that the light comes on in this case.

Well AllDodge, you were quite correct. The interrupter switch was not making up when the dog clutch rolled over so I adjusted the switch arm, put the boat in the water this afternoon and it ran flawlessly all day in and out of gear. I also adjusted both of the shift cables but I'm positive it was the switch not making up. The bad news was no salmon in the boat! Now for the trim indicators..........

Thanks for taking the time to give me your valuable input.
