New rules, going to or coming from U.S.

New homeland security rules will take affect within the next 18 months. All Canadians and U.S. citizens will have produce a passport, or nexus card to enter or re-enter the U.S.. Thought I'd give everyone a heads up..I don't know what its like in the U.S., but its a pain (edit) to get one in Canada.

Jim

I'm sure every terrorist trying to enter the US from Canada is towing a boat and has all the proper fishing gear loaded!! However, I'm all for securing our borders. But let's get real on profiling and stop this stupid political correctness attitude.

It's always the grandparents that are taking their grandchildren fishing that should be strip searched and questioned for hours, they are the most likely terrorists.

Don't joke. My brother, son and I took my Dad to Alaska for a fishing trip two years ago. 4 flights each way (Orlando to Pheonix, Phoenix to Seattle, Seattle to Fairbanks, Fairbanks to Cordova (plus some puddle jumping)). I was 41, my brother 39, my son 12 and my Dad 72. We are all generally as "American" looking as the stereotype. On the trip, one of our party got pulled out of the line three different airports for the detail seach (handheld metal detector, bag seach). Each time it was my 72 father. Is that a bunch of Shiite or what? On the way back after many hours of flying, getting on the the last plane, tired and haggard from spending 14 hours in the airport, my father who was hunch over, get pulled from the line for a terrorist check while other young men and women passed right through. Un blanking believable. If that is security, I don't want it. How many 72 year old terrorist do you read about?

Bummer. My dog ate my passport. SERIOUSLY. I't not kidding. I just got back from the UK a few weeks ago and I didnt' get around to putting it back in the firebox. I was cleaning my office a few days ago, and I put all my papers to go in the box on the flor and kept cleaning. 10 minutes later I hear my dog chewing on something next to me, I turn around, the cover in her mouth chewed to peices. LOL. I have pictures, I'm not lying!!

reka12
Your story is unreal, a 72 year old male really fits the stereotype of a terrorist.

They pulled a kid out at Raleigh/Durham Intl. for having a dangerous weapon..............a plastic GI Joe doll.

Uh, oh. Thanks for the heads up Jim. Used to getting thru' with just a drivers lic. for the yearly trip to Snow Lake MB that we are leaving for in approx 1 month. Does anyone know if you need the Passport now? Mine is waaayyy outdated and it is a pain and is expensive to get one expedited (I helped my dad do that last year because his Drivers Lic. was expired).

Also, what are they going to do when they have carloads of guys going fishing like you and me that had no idea of the changes. Hold everyone there???? There's not enough rooms in the border cities in Canada for all those guys?!?

No you won't need your passport yet....Wasn't supposed to take effect until sometime next year. There has been a lot of people bashing the decision, lawmakers, and large companies on both sides of the border, current status is its under review.Billions of dollars a week in goods and thousands of people comute to work every day, both ways through the Windsor Detroit border .Any additional slow downs, and or confusion could realy impact both economies. Canadas more than the U.S.. Personaly I would be pissed off If I was a U.S. citizen, and had to show a passport to get back into my own country. However Canada needs to tighten up its immigration rules. Currently anyone who lands in Canada, can show up with no I.D. whatsoever, claim refuge status, and spend the rest of his/her life appealing any deportation order, even if its found they are not refugees, criminals back home or even members of extremist groups. While in Canada they take full advantage of free legal aid, health care and of course welfare. This is not a knock on all immigrants ,just the way my gov handles immigration.Sorry for the rant. If these rules do take affect, we can thank the Candian gov. If you ever can't get back to the U.S., remember to say your a refugee (make sure you have your boat with you), give me a call I know some great fishing spots :D We'll get ya real good lawer (free of course), and we can sit around and drink beer( welfare money, going rate is around 1600$ per month) til we get your passport.

Jim

Well we're back and it was more trouble than previous years. Wish we would have all had our birth certificates. Had a 1/2 hour wait going into Canada while our drivers lic. were all checked out. Next year we're all having passports.

Save the parts - it's a lot easier to replace a damaged passport than a lost one (BTDT). And do it right away, don't wait until you need it - "replacement" always seems to be more of a hassle than renewal.
