Four Winns 285 Twin 5.0 w/Cobra's
Replaced both Impellers and housings.
Disconnected hose to thermostat housing.
Ran engines, No water from either hose.?

Both sides:
With impeller and housing removed
Cranked engines, shaft rotates acw.
Poured water down the hose, water seen pouring out left side opening.
Pour water down the right side opening and water pours out of foot.

Any suggestions please.

I would review your work making sure the base gaskets are correct.
Never use grease on rubber impellers, K-Y is better.

Thanks, These replaced the original ones so kinda like reverse, certainly not much in the installation. Checked over and over again and has me baffled.
The boat is on trailer so I'm putting it in the water to test.

Someone at the marina suggested priming and wonder if anyone has had to do that?

Ayuh,.... How deep are you backin' it in,..??

As I just posted in another forum you asked this question,.....
These pumps are flooded entry pumps,....
They will Not suck water,.....
If the pump is submerged, it'll pump,..... otherwise, it won't,....

I'm sorry, we are going around and around with this.
I back the boat in the water till it floats away from the trailer
then the boat will be ready to go if the engines come to the correct temperature. I am familiar that the pumps have to be submerged to
operate that's why I cant understand why the not pumping.

1) which impeller kit did you use? OEM is best
2) that oring gasket for the housing can move out of place when installing it. I will test that by running it on the muffs & watching for water leakage around the housing before re installing the plastic cover
3) there is a nipple in the housing with a hose connected to it, make sure this is not clogged and water squirts out when the hose is removed with the engine running. I think this was designed this way to allow the pump to prime easier

Using OEM housings & impeller kits & doing the 2 checks above I’ve never had trouble with it priming. Also when I install the oring gasket I put a bit of Evinrude triple guard grease instead of gasket sealer in the groove in the housing; this holds it in place while you install the housing.
I change them every 3 seasons….

Thanks for that Lou C, I used an OEM advertised housing, it sure looked identical to the ones I removed. The little hole was clear and could blow genitally through the hose. I used little amount of permaseal non hardening to one side of the o'ring gasket and the number of times I've removed it to check, it's holding up perfectly. I haven't been able to use muffs yet to to no avail to water where I keep boat but will be tomorrows project.
I few videos I've watched mention that small hose is supplying water to lubricate something, I'm not sure if this is correct but would make more sense, as you mentioned to prime the pump and show it's pumping.
When operating on muffs, where exactly would I see water shooting out?
Many thanks for this info to both.

From
The nipple on the housing
I think I read somewhere it was also supposed to be like a tell tale on an outboard & you’d see water coming out from under the housing letting you know the impeller is working.
Make sure no water is seeping out around the housing when running it on the muffs
Did you also replace the wear plate for the impeller? If these are scored from sucking up sand they won’t pump well.

Wear plate was replaced. I have also a 15hp johnson, nice stream of water shows pump is performing when underway. I'm assuming that the Cobra tell-tail is only visible when on muffs. Would be nice to have something visible to show pump is not operating on start up before noticing your engine is overheating. Was thinking of putting a 1" piece of plastic in-line to form a site glass, think it could come in handy.

Pictures from your collection?

My thought is if I pour water into the disconnected hose from the thermostat housing as if to prime the pump, the water should go into the left side of the pump and drain out through the small hole and on to the foot via the small hose.

Question, where should I see the water come out?
This should prove the small hose area is not blocked specially if we are assuming it is there to prime the pump.

This is the vent hose that comes from the lower part of the pump housing, it doesn't look very long and may just protrude just below that opening.
What say you?

That hose plugs into a hole in the upper gear housing so you don’t see the water coming out. If you wanted to use it as a tell tale I guess you could re route that hose to a hole in the plastic cover.
Your idea about filling the raw water hose is a good one, I do that for my first start of the season. Water mixed with dawn dish soap to lube the impeller.
Make sure there is no marine growth on that plastic water intake screen. I had problems with barnacles growing on it & just split the drive & removed it.

I removed the housing and held it flat and poured water into it and the water drained down the small hole and came out at the rear end under the propeller. Proves the small hose is allowing water to flow.

This should auto prime the pump due to when the foot is in the water the water level will rise thru the pump thru the small hose to the outside water level which will totally sumurge the pump to the water level.

Purchased these pumps from local store and removing them and replacing them with originals that I just took off, they worked perfectly. Lou C had mentioned about buying OEM and to find these were not. The internals were loose and the metal housing part that the impeller sits and was loose were small gaps around the shoulder. Re-purchased two complete pumps and installed and worked perfectly. Thanks for help, never thought you would buy two defective pumps and wanted to replace the originals as they looked worn and probably had been on for years.
