New dog

Just got a new beagle off my brother today. He's 4 yrs old. He's outside now in the large enclosure I built for him, barking his head off. He is used to being with 3 other dogs and is now temporarily by himself. I'm getting another beagle pup in a couple of weeks to go with him. I think its going to be a long night! He is the father of the pup I'm soon getting, when its old enough. He managed to impregnate the mother in the adjoining kennel my brother has, through a chain link fence! I think I'll rename him Houdini!

If he's used to being inside, it'll take him a while to get used to living outdoors.

If he's used to being outside, but with three other dogs I don't know how long it'll take him to calm down. (I haven't had an outdoor dog since my great-grandfather's hunting spaniels.)

I've always found beagles to be rather vociferous anyway

He's always been outside, but with company in the kennels next to him. He barked constantly until 12:30 am and then I had to go get him and make a bed for him in the garage and put him in there for the night. My wife was getting a scary look in her eye. He was much better in the garage, so maybe I'll keep doing that until he gets used to his new environment and the new pup can come down with him. It will be worth it in the fall when I can get in the woods hunting rabbits (I hope)!

Beagles bark ... it is just what they do. I am sure once he gets used to the place and gets a buddy he will be fine. Congrats on the new family member!

Good luck with the new pup, he’ll come around. Beagles are neat dogs. My Dad had a few. Used to love hunting rabbits over them. He also kept them outdoors.

It's a cool sound when you get a whole fleet of 'em on the hunt barking their heads off. They've got a unique bark.

Yeah, he was much better the second night. He seems to be settling in. My wife bought me a new Benelli Nova 12 ga. as a retirement gift so I should be all set this fall. Can't wait to get the pup that I will soon be getting, in the woods this fall. Its always fun, training a new dog.
