Im still new to boating, owner of SeaRay 280 Sundancer. Its a shame of my mom for buying me a boat to make me "happy" and im not really happy. Since she has the property power of this boat and I have to go with her to captain the boat. Shes not much of a boating person like I am and she wont let me to go beyond the point- to go somewhere farther away from our marina (Half Moon Bay) such to go onto Long Island Shore. She never let me have the chance to explore more on the water. My mom and I had a talk about finding new friends within nearby area. I thought it wasnt a bad idea because I cant rely on blowing my money away for hiring a Captain which normally costs $500 or even more for long trip lesson. If anyone who is interested to join with me to go boating to Long Island, I will be truly pleased. I got a lot to learn. Its my responsibility to pay for gas, and treat you guys dinner. Lemme know what you have to say about this.

Joey

Let me get this straight. Your not happy because your mom bought you a 31' mini yacht, and wants her name on it to... If you dont mind me asking.. how old are you? Maybe she could buy some friends for you too. I'd say if your new to boating, perhaps its best that you hire an instructor to teach you the ropes before you head offshore.

Just my 2 cents.

Your boat?
You got that right! The boat is under my mom's name. This is exactly what kind I have the one in the picture you showed me. Im 26 years old. I know how to operate a boat and am fairly good at docking with a help from docking guy. Only thing i need to learn is to go to different towns and understand water safety navigation strategy same way when you drive in a car- highway, exit number, speed limit, and where to find fuel service, lodge.

Changed my mind. I'll use miles for the Airplane ticket. You guarantee me two days and local expenses and consider it done.

CaptainJoe

Check and see if you have a local chapter of the Power Squadrons. Usually good folks with a ton of boating knowledge. Always welcome new members.

Dave..

Buy some charts of the Long Island sound, Hudson River, New Jersey cost, etc and start making plans to take your mom on a trip to somewhere like Shelter Island or Sag Harbor, for example where you can dock over night and she can go shopping in town in a nice up scale area.

It sounds like even though she bought the boat for you, it is HER boat and she wants to keep that control.

By taking a nice trip you can demonstrate your seamanship and gain some trust from her.

Sign up for a Powersquadron class and get your certificate. Thats a start. I don't blame her for not letting a "newbe" take that expensive boat out alone or far. You have to prove to her that you earned the rights to the helm.
