You can do whatever you think. But I would try to make a wedge type inside wood or metal piece setup to attach the bow eye to. It needs to be large enough to spread the pull weight into the entire front bow and not just a threaded bolt. But that is just my opinion...

I would never use rubber. that piece of wood lasted about 60 years. get another piece of white oak and it will last another 60 years. or about 200 years if you put paint on the wood

Rubber and JB....Ohhhhh gosh no. Wood???? Must have been a rube goldberg setup in the first place.

I had the same problem on a SeaNymph tinny. First, I took all the existing pot metal stuff out and threw it in the trash. Then I bought a 2-bolt SS bow eye and drilled a second hole thru the stem. The eye came with 2 nuts, lock washers and a SS backer plate. Sealed it with 5200.

Tight as a drum. That was about 1986 and she still holds true to this day.

White oak isn't hard to find. Check with most any cabinet shop. They probably have some scraps that would work perfectly. White oak is a very good wood to use since it resists rot and decay. That isn't true with red oak or most any other hard woods. Don't use pine or anything like that and most certainly don't use treated wood of any type. It will react with the aluminum and eat the metal.away...

no, you need an elastomeric sealant.

if you have a lowes, or an ace hardware there is 5200

walmart even carries it.

amazon can have you a tube tomorrow

OMG JB and wood again. If you absolutely have to have the existing eye, just go to a hardware store and buy a piece of aluminum flat stock. Whatever wood you use has a finite life (you already found that out). Aluminum will outlast the boat.

If you just have to go fishing before you get the proper sealant, leave it unsealed and do it right after you get the parts.
