Re: Need engine to match up with '57 Herter Eldorado
Hi BDH,
Without a doubt, the best motor built in that range of years and your range of horsepower is the 1960-1961 Merc 500. It's light, gives a strong 50hp, many parts are still available, and it has a full gearshift. The larger Mercs of that era had a troublesome direct reversing scheme, and the large OMCs were extreme gas hogs and parts are getting scarce for them. Mercury built a lot of them so finding one shouldn't be to difficult.
If you're a bit of a wrench you can even do some updates to a vintage 500 by using parts and assemblies from later 50hp Mercs like ignition components or even complete powerheads. Vintage look with more modern reliability...
- Scott
