nada values

I am looking for my 1st boat, and my price range is around $3k. Obviously, this limits my to older boats. Are the NADA values accurate for older boats (like the mid 1980's)? It seams NADA values for older boats are a bit under valued.

For example, I am looking at a Rinker 170, 1984 with 1984 evinrude 90hp. Guy is asking $3,000.00, but NADA rates this package at about $ 1,600.00. Boat's in good shape, and while I was unsure of the $3,000 price tage, $ 1,600 seams too low.

Thanks.

Re: nada values

Also look carefuly what is included in the price. Sometimes nada adds the motor or trailer, sometimes it dont....

If the boat has no rot, looks good, and runs well....I'd say it's worth the $3k. If properly maintained that 90 HP V4 Evinrude will last a long time. My uncle had a '77 Rinker with a '77 85HP Evinrude. Used it HARD from '77 till he sold it floating and running in '95. Good boats.

Re: nada values

i never pay attention to NADA, location, and condition play too big a factor.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Re: nada values

NADA on older boats is usually WAY off. There comes a certain point that a running motor and a boat that floats is worth way more than X amount of dollars. Condition also plays a big factor.

Re: nada values

What is the economy like up there in WI? Really far south people can not give there boats away. Ever try selling a car anywhere near what NADA says it is worth? Good luck!
If you really like the boat, offer 2000. Although it is a fresh water motor, it has some years on it. Something that old, buy it for the hull, not a 24 yro. motor. My guess is he will be happy taking 2K. regards FRED

Re: nada values

NADA is just a GUIDE not the Bible.
Condition and location are also important.
NADA is using figure several months old, with the increase in fuel prices the boat market is changing daily. I would assume that small, fuel efficient boats are doing better than high-powered fuel-thirsty boats, but I also just read that Fountain Boats is hiring extra employees and opening a new production facility and they are hardly fuel efficient - go figure.
Also make sure that the NADA figure includes trailer and motor (I looked up my boat and it did not). I think someone else already mentioned this.

Re: nada values

NADA values are based on actual sales that were reported by their subscribing members...banks, dealers, etc.. It's specific to location and isn't hearsay or what somebody just thinks the price should be. The "free" NADA web site actually shows the values 10% less than what the members see in their books...which are published monthly.

On a boat that old I wouldn't rely too much on book values because there are too many variables. Like mentioned already, here in da south we are seeing boats for peanuts now. $3000 will buy a mint garage kept 10 yr old boat like that. They are getting to be as common as house foreclosures. I talked to a guy yesterday who has a mint 5yr old 21' KeyLargo CC with 150 Yamaha, alum dual wheel trailer and electronics for take over payments...$200 mo. He bought it new and used it only 5 times.
