Took my wife fishing for the first time on Saturday (she didn't want me to get the boat to start with!).

Went out in Galveston Bay. Didn't catch much, but she landed a stingray and a nice black drum. Had a good size flounder but lost it. These were the biggest fish she's ever caught.

Overall trip was good. 1 19" speckled trout, 1 16" flounder 1 black drum and a gafftop. Enough for dinner anyways.

She asked me on the way home if we could go on Sunday. All this from my bride who didn't want the boat!

Quick, rush out and purchase her a lifejacket with her name embossed onto it. Then get a name tag to stick by the windshield where she sits. That way you'll be certain she'll be there each time you go out. The pride will show through.
Ross

My used to fish then we had kids now neither of us fish much when they are along. Now things are getting better as the kids entertain each other when they get bored of fishing giving us a chance to enjoy it more. I usually save my real fishing time till after they want to go home and we either get grandma to pick them up at the ramp or the wife takes them home. As I said it is getting better and more and more my favorite fishing partner is going with me on hard core trips and lo and behold she is bringing 2 more little carbon coppies with her.

KeltonKrew, it will get only better. If you have one that likes to fish, stick with her. Mine was a fishing person when we met some 35 year ago and it has been a blast and still is. We have 3 grown girls now and nothing that ties us down and we have a really good time.
Good luck with the new bride.

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

Related story: I was fishing with my wife in Lake Moultrie, SC. We were in water about 4 ft. deep. I looked down over the bow and saw a huge gator on the bottom of the lake. (We two northerners didn't know they were in the lake.) My trolling motor was just a few inches from his head. I asked my wife to take a look. Well, that appeared to be a mistake, I thought at the moment. Let's just say she was NOT impressed.

Later, on the trip back to the dock, the wind picked up, and since we were on the leeward side of the lake, the waves were substantial. Plus we had to traverse the waves almost parallel to them to get to the dock. It was a wild ride in my flat-bottomed Tracker bassboat.

My wife, aware that gators were in the lake, went ballistic!

After we got home, I had no trouble justifying a new boat--one with a deep-V and lots of freeboard!

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

I have actually hit them with the trolling motor and had them thrash and leave a big wake getting away. The sitting on bottom is a gators way of hiding. You would never realize how many times people in gator country have run over them while fishing and never knew a thing. Gators can be fun but expensive. They love top water lures especially poppers and I have more than once had to decide is it worth the risk to retrieve the lure. So far the answer is no (unless it was under 4' or so). If you make it back down here for some boating/fishing let me know perhaps we can meet up sometime and share a cup or two.

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

Hey Guys ....
You know why the ladies always catch more fish then you do???

Because we have far more patiences and a lighter, more sensitive touch. ;) lol

I have been a fishing nut since I was a kid but I could rarely get my 2 older brothers to take me with them when I was young. They always said they didn't want to take me because they couldn't fish when I was with them because they spent all their time taking a whole bunch of fish off the hook for me. But the biggest reason was because I made them look bad in front of their friends because I always caught more fish. :(

Well, when I got older and started dating I made up my mind I would not date anyone that didn't like to fish and wouldn't take me with them.( oh ya, and did I mention they had to have a boat or know someone how did!) ;)
Well even as I was going through those years I ran into the same issue as I did with my brothers...they didn't want to go fishing with me very often because I would always catch more fish then they did...(BTW: I learned to take the fish off the hook myself by this time...lol :D )

So, I decided I was tired of relying on some guy just to be able to go fishing a few times and then not being ask to go with him ever again ....so I bought my own boat and went on my own. But it just wasn't as much fun as it was when I had someone to share it with.

Funny how things turned around for me a few years later....
My husband married me for my 2 boats and a lifetime fishing partner! :)
We have been together for 6 wonderful years now! And we fish every living moment we get. He doesn't even mind that I seem to catch more fish then he does. He says he gets a good laugh and great memory out of every one I catch!
He says he always has an "ace in the hole" when we enter the fishing tournaments....he has a women on board! lol :D

Remember ...Guys, be patient don't give up on those ladies! You might miss out on alot of great times together, moments you'll treasure forever. Oh ya..... and alot of really BIG FISH!......... You may not be the one to catch 'em but at least you'll get to see 'em!! lol  ;)

Army Girl MP

"Work is for those who don't know how to fish"
"If I ain't catchin' 'em it ain't fishin'!"

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

Welcome to the board Armygrlmp. I agree. I wish my wife would like fishing more. I can say that at least bass fishing she catches bigger ones than me. I don't get out much, but the last two years My son and wife have caught keeper bass for dinner and I have not. I have caught more bass than them, but none of them were keepers. In fact, I went out with another person this year and he caught a keeper bass too. Now on the big bluegills, I smoked all but the guy I fished with who caught slightly more than me plus the bass. His butt hurt for a couple months after from sitting on the bench seat in my boat. Hopefully I will have some padded seats next time. I sure wish I had more time to fish.

Sloopy, Have you been up all night?

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

I have to put in two things here.
1. Where were you before I met my wife? She fishes but I had to provide the boat and such. Among my small circle of close fishing buddies you would have been fought over even before you had the boat.
2. Although we need Derwoods advice on this one it looks like we have a female monk in our midst. What do we call her? Nun, Sister, Priestess Not sure as that is not my specialty.
BTW welcome to the board Army.

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

Sloopy,

You catch a big black drum over oyster beds or deep holes, using shrimp (or better yet, blue crabs broke in half).

Once they hit, hold on because the fight is on.

Last one I caught was 40 1/2" long, took about 25 minutes to land. Can't eat em that big, they're full of spaghetti worms (Nasty!).

With the stingrays, depending on size I keep them. sling em in the boat, use a paddle to isolate the end of the tail and cut off the barb. Meat tastes like scallops. You don't catch them all that often, but when you do, they put up a hell of a fight!

Re: My Wife is Hooked!

It never hurts when the wife likes to get a tan while fishing. Mine likes to wear a bathing suit when its hot.Its good for the eyes and helps pass the time when the fishing is slow. If you know what i mean. :D
