My family apparently does not belong on the water...

Last summer my dad finally got his first boat...which he has wanted a boat for 30+ years. He got an 18 foot sea hunt bow rider. Awesome boat.

Regardless, my little brother and I had just ventured into some old Craigslist jet skis to wrench around on...and we both got our NC boating licenses since we were under 26 (18 and 24 years old) My mom kept telling my dad he should get a boating license even though it isn't required, just because he has never owned his own boat, though he has driven friends boats, etc, but he said he didn't need one blah blah blah. The second time he took the boat out with my mom...he was in a narrow channel and for some reason determined the channel markers did not apply to him...when....ka-thunk...he got stuck in 1.5 feet of water!!!! The worst part was my mom was just saying..."Honey, aren't you supposed to stay between those post thingies?" Needless to say, we all enjoyed giving my dad a hard time :) Luckily there was no damage and a nice gentleman helped get us out.

Fast forward a few months (3 weeks ago)...my little brother and I decided to take the boat out, seeing as we are legally licensed boaters. We put some gas in the boat and went cruising. After about an hour, we were getting ready to come back in....but the fuel gage said we were half full...hmmm...that seemed odd since we didn't put a whole lot of gas in to start with. Oh well, we go for one more little lap down the ICW when all of a sudden...the engine dies out on us and won't up. We tap the fuel gage a few times...and the needle falls to EMPTY...DOHHHH! THe boat ran out right out of reach from a marina dock with a GAS PUMP on it...but the current took as away. We had to carefully navigate to a dock (collapsable paddles actually came in handy..suprisingly in the current) and tie up and by the time we got to a gas can and the marina...the gas pump was no longer in service...DOHH! After calling MOMMY and begging for a ride to get some gas, we finally were able to get the boat back in....

BUT...my MOM is now the CAPTAIN:facepalm:

Great story Rob. As soggy says, Moms are ALWAYS in charge, despite what your Dad may think! :D

my boat hasd a 55 gallon gas tank thought i was good it said it was a little under half... went to fill it up yesturday and i put in 36 gallons/$150.02 shockinly it wasn't toped off but i only had $150. in cash on me. hate inaccuracy on fuel gauges, my truck is half empty with 150 miles getting about 200 miles a tank do that math...

I dont have a fuel gauge, per-say, so if I get a bad reading, its my own damn fault.
What I do have is a tank that sits just below the deck, with a straight vertical filler neck. I have a wooden dowel I carved graduations into that I can drop into the tank.
I made the overly expensive fill mistake once, as I was told the boat had a 40 gallon tank when I bought it, but it is, in fact, a 55 gallon tank.

What you all are forgetting is that most gas tanks don't have strait side or top & bottoms. The fuel gauge is going by the spot were it is located, not the tank size. You just have to figure out what the gauge is telling you.

But what happend hear is the gauge stick.

Not exactly, DAD is the CAPTAIN, and mom, The Admiral, gave him permission to call himself the captain.

I have a guage on an old boat that shows "full" until I get to a quarter of a tank, when it moves to "half." At "quarter" I have 2 gallons left. it's a 17 gallon tank. So I keep it full and watch it, and use the guage like the "low fuel" warning on a car. I am never far from a gas supply.
Another one drops to "half" when I've used about a quarter (80 gallon tank) so that's a good time to refill.

Point is, you have to know your own boat and that gas guages on boats are seldom if ever close to accurate. And "E" does not stand for "Enough."

If my gauge gets low I just trim the nose up and the gauge goes up.

LOL,

sadly doesnt work when the tank is so empty that your running on fumes then E is empty.
i think i want to convert my motor to run on either air or water. problem is if its water i must fill the tank still if its air i just open the fill cap and i am good. any ideas on how to make water or air combustable?

Water's tough. With air you just add gasoline.

Water is easy!

You just add high voltage and it breaks down from H2O to hydrogen and oxygen.

So, the question is, how much extension cord do you own?

Knowing your boat is key....and I have learned how the fuel gage works! I had only been out on it a few times, and most of the time my dad is driving, so I didn't have prior experience with judging fuel level....but now I do!

Moms are always right...that is true!

Hi, ...fuel senders are easy to replace, fuel gauges are easy to test &/or replace.
I strongly recommend repairing any incorrect gauges. Or be prepared with a fall back plan as some in here are.
And I'd challenge the poster who says the tank shape makes a gauge wrong. Most boat tanks are rectangular. Fuel senders can be set to deal with that shape pretty easily.

i remember the first time i took my outboard out when i had it, 90 hp v-4 i had 6 gallons of gas thought i was good for 5-6 hours i ran about 2 and putt putt stumble backfire... learned with that thing always run around the lake on 1 tank once its out switch to the 2nd and go back to the docks. i was shocked that 6 gallons only lasted me 2 hours max 1 1/2 if i was wide open. half the reason i got rid of it every time i went out i needed 12 gallons of gas.

Fortunately, I have a little stowage near the stern where a 2 gal. auxiliary (read that "uh-oh") can sits ... just in case.

My relatively new boat is EXACTLY like that. I prefer the needle stay in the pegged above F zone. Once it starts moving much below 'F', i'm starting to think about a gas pump.

With the asterick being MOST... In my boat, the tank is form fitted to the bottom of the relatively sharp V hull. So it is a nice triangle shape. The top 1/3 of the tank holds more than the bottom 2/3's combined. That is also why the gauge shows as it does, its accurate as far a the sender->gauge relationship goes. And it is actually calibrated so that E actually does mean empty, but the rate the gauge drops is no where close to linear.
