I am restoring a 40E75. Almost finished.

Problem is I am running it in a barrel. Ran it for periods less than a minute because I see that it is getting hot. (I know it needs the propeller on) and no water is coming out of the exhaust bypass above the water line.

It should be spitting out a bit of water when it gets to running temps,

I disassembled the top cylinder plate to inspect the thermostat. There is no thermostat on these engine.

I looked everywhere! All diagrams. Original Johnson manual makes no mention of it. Parts catalog makes no mention of it and there is nowhere I can see where it could be located.

New pump assembly, gearcase rebuilt, all new seals, o-rings,etc. Everything except powerhead. It has good compression and runs well.

Are there Johnson outboards from the 70 that have a design not requiring a thermostat???

Regardless of it having a thermostat or not it should be pumping water. Revisit your impeller work. It also does not need the prop on to pump water.

1970 was the last year that the 43.9 cu in. 40hp had a Thermostat. In 71, OMC switched to the Gale Division's Engine Block, which was more basic.
