Rookie here. Where can I look up "muffs" on the net? I need some but can't find the right key words to search. Thanks.

I need the thing to hook to a garden hose to supply water to the engine in the driveway. Is that a flusher? Which one will I need? The boat is a '79 Cobalt, Mercruiser.

I think the best muffs are these:

They mount securely and work great.

Those look like what I use for my Mercruiser Alpha 1 outdrive. They work fine for me, but it totally depends on what kind of motor you have. That is the most common style that should fit most outboards made over the past 30 years or so. But I know for a fact that will not work on a Volvo outdrive...totally different water intake location.

I also agree with previous poster, they're a dime a dozen and available most anywhere that has basic marine & fishing equipment. If you're not 100% certain it'll fit your motor, you may want to buy local so you can return/exhange if necessary. Then again, $6 delivered to your door is a pretty good deal and it should get the job done just fine.

I decided to "gamble" on the whole $6 and ordered one. They tech guy says it will work just fine on a Mercruiser.

Thanks all.

Re: Muffs

Those will work just fine on a merc drive! Just don't rev the motor much over idle and keep an eye on the muffs and temp while you are using them. If they slip off while the motor is running you will ruin your impellar in a matter of seconds.

Whoops...I didn't catch that you earlier told us you had a Mercruiser.

I agree. It'll work fine. $6 well spent.

More advice... go at idle or very near, and be sure the leg is full down.

I will definately take it slow and easy. The last thing I want to do is screw things up before I ever get on the water. Plenty of time to screw up then!

I know it has been unusually warm around here lately, but the cold will be back. If you are doing some work on it now and using the muffs, don't let it freeze up. That can definatley screw things up before spring!

I don't plan to work on it now - just getting everything ready for when the itch really hits.

I really like the all-plastic ones from Wal-mart for $3. I've used a lot of different ones, these seem to hold best out of all of them.
