I have a question, may sound stupid but here goes. I have a 1966 Johnson 20hp outboard. I just bought a 16 ft alumacraft boat with steering. I'd like to mount the motor permanently. Not just over the transom top. Can it be done and what do I need to do it. There are no bolt holes in my bracket now to go thru the transom. Thanks all you all have helped me alot in the past.

There are 2 holes where the stern brackets bolt together. You could remove those 2 slot head screws and bolt it there or drill your own holes outside of each of those holes. If you do this and the bolt heads stick out you might not be able to use the bottom tilt pin hole. I try to find a way to put at least one "hidden" bolt on all my motors. Not to keep it from jumping off but for thieves.

Bolt the motor on transom as it was meant to be bolted, figure 1. If thieves is what bothers you. Once all holes have been drilled on transom and all bolts and nuts well secured tight with proper washers, pressure washers weld all nuts onto the bolts.

Personally wouldn't want doing that theft deterrant procedure till I'm positively sure there's a spot on motor/transom height match and motor working top. Once you know that can procede.

There is no place to bolt this motor as already stated in the first post.

Yep, sorry skipped the first post. Upload a clear pic with motor fully tilted up to check which part of the swivel bracket would be ideal to drill holes for bolts to go through.

If you do not want to drill the transom bracket you can use some square u-bolts.. Put them around that cross member I was talking about. If you do this you can move the motor up if needed. Just install them so you can move the motor up if need be.

The transom clamp screws are strong enough to hold the motor and if you need to raise it up put something under it.. like a 1x2 ect.

Perhaps overly naive, but assuming most small motors are stolen on a grab-and-run basis, I replaced one of my kicker's clampscrews with an Allen Head bolt. I figure the crook isn't going to go back home and get an Allen wrench in the short time while the rig is parked in front of the Waffle House for breakfast.

Easier than welding the nuts on is to pound on the bolt end with a hammer to mushroom it out a little. A few seconds with a grinder is all it takes to free it up.

That is also what I meant by a "hidden" bolt to keep someone from just turning the clamp screws and pulling the motor off.. Anything to slow them down might help.

I'm trying to make the motor stronger on the transom. And prevent it from coming off or being stolen

For that to work will need to drill new hole/holes at back transom to hide such bolts, but must pass necessarily through transom to secure harwdare on other bolt/ bolts sides which will be highly visible to thieves. So useless..

Short story, my boating Club had this nice 60 Merc properly bolted onto a transom for years, all bolts and nuts were so darn rusted and welded together that owner could not remove the motor from boat. Guess what, motor was stolen in jless 15 minutes by pro thieves when the night's Club guardian went to the restroon to lose added weight.

The thick cable remote package along both remote steering cables were cut like cheese. Nobody has invented anything to stop sophisticated thieves from stealing whatever part is installed on your boat, worse if already have set their sights on such parts that belongs to you.
