I have a 16' fishing boat and just bought a Canon Easi-Troll HS. the mounting plate for the downrigger has the drill holes farther apart the the rail is wide on my boat.

I was wondering how people would attach the downrigger mount in this type of situation. I really don't want to spend $75 on a clamp-based mount. The downrigger was expensive enuf.

don't know what your railing looks like, but two common ways of doing it are like this:

Both of these can be made removable. Backing and support plates should be made of fairly heavy aluminum. Something you can drill & tap. (Aluminum is just as easy to work with as wood is) The board should be a good 2 x 8. I'd suggest a good paint/finish job and not pressure treated as PT will crack & warp.

If you post a pic, maybe I can come up with something else that'll work for you.
