My Evinrude 100 will run fine when the cover is off, but when I put the cover back on it loses power and sometimes completely stalls.

Any sugestions?
I saw another post like yours. They say when that happens there are leaking seals or gaskets in the power head. Do a little detective work maybe youll find something.
I just got the boat out of the shop where they had replaced a gasket due to a water leak in the engine. They also fine tuned the engine. I sure would have thought they would have caught something like that when it was in the shop.

It all started the first time I put it back in the water.
I've run into a similar problem on 80's
evinrude's where the latch would smuck the spark plug boot when cover both removed and replaced. The boot would wear away and jump a spark across to the latch and cause a miss...you might check to make sure that is not your problem...just a Thought
Thought101,

Thats exactly what I thought the problem was, as when I grabbed the latch I got shocked. So I replaced the spark plug wire.

It doesnt shock me any more but the engine is still cutting out with the lid on.

I have someone that is supposed to come look at it this week. I have told him what everyone here suggest so hopefully I can get it all fixed this week.

Thanks everyone for your help.
If the cover is not interfering with the electical/ignition system, then most likely it's causing your engine to starve for air. Like Steelspike...I recall an almost identical post like yours some months ago. Seems to me the problem was an exhaust leak that starved the engine for fresh air with the cover on.

Good luck...

Walt
Same problem with a Johnson 120 on our dive boat. Took it to the shop and they could not find problem, but when it got back I did. The gasket where the upper exhaust port comes out of the cowling was out of place. It would cover the exhaust port forcing it back into the cowling. I put the gasket back in place and no problems since. Hope this helps.
Had the same problem with my OMC. Changed the plugs, but more importantly got new spark plug wires - no more shocks, engine stopped losing rpms when lid was placed back on top, fixed the problem! Good Luck.
I had this problem with my '72 evinrude. I founr that when I put the cowling on it would suck a loose piece of the insullation (on the inside of the cowling) into the air intake and starve it.
