My morse or teleflex steering, im not sure which it is....it is a thick black cable with the extendable ram at the motor end, seems to be uncoupled inside the thick black cable.
Does anyone know how to service these things?
I think its uncoupled right near where the extendable ram is, and it looks like you can peel the black covering on the cable back, but Im not sure.
Any help would be great,
thanks,
dave.

cables are really non servicable items...

Its safer to just replace it, and they are not that expensive either...

Steering is a bad place to experiment on a boat...

rgds

Frank

Thanks Frankie,
Yeah, I was thinking on doing just that since the Morse dealer is literally about two minutes down the road from my home here in Auckland but I thought since someone built the darn thing, someone should be able to fix it...hopefully me!
Well, I guess Ill just see what the dealer says tommorrow and take it from there.
thanks,
dave.

You are best to just replace it as stated above.
They are not that expensive and you can have it changed and back on the water in no time at all.

Re: Morse or Teleflex steering problem

I took the cable off the boat today, and then I saw the friggin core of the cable (the sort of twisted center part) actually broke about 1 foot from the transom.
So there is no way to fix it. Morse/Teleflex do not sell just the cores.
But the above advice is correct. I got a brand new replacement cable for $150.
However, installation is another matter.
One must be carefull to perfectly measure and line up BOTH ends of the cable for everything to work properly. What I thought would be an easy off and on job ended up taking half the day!
Anyways, the good news is the steering broke while I was just turning the wheel in the driveway...not out at sea. The outboard gods must have been smiling on me this time!!! :) :)

Re: Morse or Teleflex steering problem

Whoooooaaaaaa, there Frankie.
Before you go and get your knickers in a twist and run back to your dealer and demand a 100.00 refund, I only needed the cable.
For the whole setup including steering box I was quoted 269.00 NZ which is about 250.00 AUD, isnt it?
The reason it was so dificult to install was on the boat where the engine sits isnt using a following arm return bar or whatever its called that normally goes into the outboard tilt tube. Now THAT would have been easy.
But my old Hartley has a clampon the transom which goes around the end of the teleflex hose and holds it in place. Then the end of the ram bolts directly onto the outboard.
So I had to measure the total travel of the ram, divide it by two, then clamp the ram in that position while I went back to the steering wheel end and had to slightly modify the steering box because the new hose end fittings are different from the older ones (I would estimate this boat is probably about 40 years old and had the ORIGINAL morse system on it)
Then I had to line up the rotary cable core so it wrapped around the drum and didn't move so as not to change the engine end length, or there wouldn't be enough travel one way or the other.
Then came the issue of clamping the teleflex hose in the proper spot on the transom to ensure centering and equal travel of the outboard....are you starting to get the idea? :)
Anyways, to make a long story even longer, all of this took multiples tries to get it right and the whole job ended up taking alot longer than I planned!!!
Also, I think if I had some sort of manual or instructions I could have done it a bit quicker as I had to sit and think about how to do it all.
regards,
dave.

Sorry, i just read your post again.. seems you did know it was AUD.

I didn't think you would find a really old morse cable replacement...

with the steering box, I got the full instructions for both.. was easy enough to put in..

I have the same transom clamp you do incidently..

rgds

Franki

Re: Morse or Teleflex steering problem

Yep, I was quite luckly to get the cable that matched up with my original oldie. The only problem was it 3.5 meters long as opposed the 3 meters that was in the boat.
But the morse dealer said he could order the 3 meter one from.....guess where? Ozzie. But that would have been about ten days longer(which I thought was unusual since most stuff comes from Ozzie overnight)
The 3.5 meter fits albeit Ive added a couple gentle curves on the way back to the engine.
Anyways, it was cheaper but admitably not easier, to just get the replacement cable instead of a whole new assembly.
cheers (as the kiwis say)
dave.
