MY, we need more information. Sounds like you had a mouse that chewed on a cable. I would assume since it died, that it chewed on a 115 volt power cord and that shorted and took out your computer?

Tell us more.

What went down, what are you missing. What you have done since it happened.

howdy Scoop.
the UPS and router are both shot from bare wires.
when power was lost, win98 wouldn't reload fully.
had to use the restore CD which installed an old
version of outlook express. dowloaded V6 from MS.
also have office 2000, but don't use the newer
version of outlook. the contact list that was
restored came from there.
the only lost info. is passwords, and my contacts
from outlook. all other data is recovered or wasn't lost.
I'm a hardware guy, not a software guy...
let me know if you need further info.
thanks!
M.Y.

MY, Search your computer for .wab files. Your reinstallation could have overwritten your current file (current before the crash), but it still may be there. Look at the date of the .wab file to try to get the right one.

It should have a date previous to the crash, but hopefully close.

Here are directions to finding it
>>>>
In Windows 98, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

In the Look in box, click My Computer.
In the Named box, type *.wab, and then click Find Now. When the search is completed, you should see a list of files with the .wab file extension in the Search Results window.

I would make a copy of all the .wab files in a folder or mutiple folders. Now you can experiment.

Here is a link to Microsoft's Knowledge base. It details how to backup and restore outlook Express files. I hope this helps backup your current situation, then find the right address book if it still exists and restore it. Good Luck

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;270670

I was more of a hardware guy also. There are laser printers I can still fix literally with my eyes closed.
There are a couple sites that help with windows problems. The first one is the Microsoft knowledge base site.
MS Knowledge base link

The second is the Google Search engine.

Google

Re: more puter stuff

M.Y., I appreciate it. I am just glad I could help. If I'm ever up that way or you come down my way, let me know. We can go out an have a beer. I'm buying. Or better yet, have a beer and catch some fish for dinner.

I hope you find a good deal on a new router and UPS. UPS may still be good with a new cord. Router may be too with a new AC adapter. Good luck with those.
