Mom and I are talking about doing a trip on the Mississippi River next year and have no idea where to start. My brother says Paddle Boats are $3500/week starting. So, any ideas out there? All help would be appreciated.
Bassy

Re: Mississippi River trip

My old buddies Tom and Huck, did the Miss on a homemade raft, quite a trip. They found a dead body and had lots of fun. :)

I'd say start south of Minneapolis and head south. Beautiful country and lots to see, and places to stop.

Another friend of mine delivered a boat from Milw, to Florida by running down the Chicago river to the Miss, then south. He had a blast.

Actually, you can buy an awfully nice paddleboat for two grand, then sell it when the trip is over. Oh wait, that would be a peddle boat. :)

http://www.greatriver.com/

http://www.greatriver.com/class.htm

http://www.hucks.com/index.htm

There are numerous tourboats operating out of most large cities on the river. Or were you planning on renting a houseboat?
Perhaps you want to travel the entire length. If so, then plan on spending the entire summer. Or do it on the cheap, buy an inflatable raft or two, and start floating. When you have had enough, get out and catch a plane home.

I would love to run the upper third of the river in a small cabin cruiser, something like Pointer has, but don't think I will ever get the chance. A trip from La Crosse Wi, south to Dubuque IA would be spectacular.

No,Barlow, we haven't decided on a starting trip.
No on the house boat or raft, but yes on some kind of tour boat. Thanks for the sites,Roscoe, that's a good start.
Bassy

Skiuseme -
Thanks for your reply. We're planning for next year; next fall. The fall colors is part of the attraction to doing it this time of year. We'd like to take a week long, so don't know if powerboat or paddleboat would be best. Which do you recommend? and what are the pros and cons of each. Glad you're able to help. I sure appreciate it.
Bassy

Re: Mississippi River trip

Ill Do some checking around for boat tours. off the top of my head there is not much around here for that but thats off the top of my head. There are tons of house boat rentals but you mentioned that you dont want that. As the past five years have gone the peak season have been between oct 5-23 Which is why I Choose my wedding to be on October 9 this year. I will Send you some Pictures of the area after we get done. Also Info for flight information. We do have a local airport here that receives 3 major airlines. Northwest, American and Skyway. Its kinda Spendy flying into La Crosse but its more than worth it for convience I think, but we are only 2 1/2 hours away from Minneapolis Which is a Major Hub for a few Airlines. Maybe you might be able to find a boat charter up there. I will update you whith the findings in a few weeks. of boat charters out of La Crosse. Also there is truely a great reason when this area is called Gods County.

Adam

Ps: please dont blast me for my horrible spelling and Skipping of words.

Re: Mississippi River trip

Bassy,

I have made the run from the twin cities to about 80 miles south of St. Louis. I will get some arguement but I wasn't real impressed when you got south of around the Davenport area. I have heard that there is a town call New Orleans that is suppose to be fun at the end but I didn't make it that far. :p

The views and sites in the upper one third are awesome. I would imagine with the colors in full during october it would be even more spectactular. The run from Chester to Davenport was more like a muddy canal. I almost ran out of gas cuz there was no place on the river to fuel up until I hit Alton, which has a great marina.

We camped on the shore most of the time and had an absolute blast. (You know us rugged outdoors men and our proud animals facing the wilderness with nothing but a flashlight and a Miller lite) But doing it first class on a river boat should be all that and a bag of chips. The post given would have been the ones I recommended in my research prior to taking my little adventure but if I dig up additional information I will be sure to sent it your way. If you would like some pic's I have a ton of those as well.

BTW, the housboat rentals are incredible. You may want to look into it if you have a large group going with you.

Adam, Congrats on your upcoming wedding.

Thanks Pointer. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am actually considering seeing if any others might want to join us and get a house boat. Quite a long trip for just a week.
Don't know if any tour boats run the entire length.
Most I have seen are day trips, or overnighters.
I'm sure they are out there, but I would want to spend some time seeing things, not just 7 days cruising a 1000+ miles.

Here's another site, which will give you an idea of the scenery and river towns on the Miss, along the WI border.

http://www.wigreatriverroad.org/

http://www.wigreatriverroad.org/rivertowns/index.asp

http://www.wigreatriverroad.org/photos/index.htm

http://www.wigreatriverroad.org/maps/maps_boating.htm

Re: Mississippi River trip

Bassy, where are you planning on starting and how far south are you planning on going? Depending on what time of year you come, the big stern wheel cruise boats stop in Vicksburg, MS and Natchez, MS. If you're interested in the old Antebelum homes, during the spring when the Pilgrimage in Natchez is going on, all the Antebelum mansions are open to the public for tours. Its really pretty in the spring with all the Azelia's and Dogwoods blooming.

Vicksburg has a good bit to see too. Theres a number old homes over looking the river, a couple of them have cannon balls from the civil war still embedded in their walls. There's Bed and Breakfast inn's all up and down the river that are really neat to stay in too. Also, theres a big civil war park there.

Then there's Memphis with the Blues, Elvis, and Mud Island. Further down is Tunica the once poorest county in the nation with is Sugar Ditch area which is now a bustling casino rich town. If you're in to gambling. Greenville, MS, Vicksburg, MS and Natchez all have casinos too.

Just a few thoughts.

Re: Mississippi River trip

Bassy I take it you check out the Mississippi queen Trip from St Paul to St Louis. on October 17-24 2005. Man That would be one heck of a trip. I would Love to do that one myself if i had the money. I found out that there are only little 2-3 day trip from la crosse on a river boat but you would have to stay onshore through the overnight. I will keep you up dated if anything else pops up

Hey, anyone know what kind of time it takes to get down the Mississippi -- for example, for a typical barge to travel from Minneapolis to NOLA, or any other segment -- how bout back up?

Thanks!

Re: Mississippi River trip

Spacemanpete...can't comment on the Mississippi, but as a kid I worked as a deckhand on a tow that pushed crude oil on the Ohio. We ran from Mt. Vernon, IN. where the Wabash River comes in,(Il., IN. border) and about river mile 830, to Catlettsburg, KY. near the W. Va. border...river mile 320. Total distance of 510 miles. The trip upstream was loaded and took 9 days IIRC...coming back down unloaded took 3 days. There are a total of 9 locks on this stretch of river.

The Mississippi is a different ballgame. The upper river alone, from Cairo, IL. where the Ohio comes in, to Minneapolis is over 850 miles with a number of locks. The lower Mississippi, from Cairo to New Orleans is also about 800 miles. There are no locks below Cairo....good news is that you don't have to lock through. Bad news is that the river cannot be controlled. During periods of high water the current may run 5 to 7 mph in a river that is out of it's banks and a mile and a half wide. The lower Mississippi can be a dangerous place. For those headed South on the rivers to the Gulf nowadays, it is probably more popular to turn up the Ohio and then into the Tennessee at Paducah, KY., from there going down through a series of lakes and on to the Gulf on the Tenn-Tom.
