Re: missing person on lake mead!las vegas, calville bay

Doesn't sound unusual at all:

Aguirre-Martinez was reported missing about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and was last seen in the water without a life jacket near Callville Bay.

The National Park Service ended its search and rescue efforts for the missing boater about 4 p.m. Wednesday and will begin recovery efforts Thursday morning.

If Aguirre-Martinez' body isn't found Thursday, the search will be scaled back to searches during normal patrol times.

Three men had been reported missing to the Park Service about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by two other people in their group who had remained on shore. A passing boater Tuesday night rescued the other two men, found clinging to a single life jacket, officials said. Neither was injured.

The struggle began when the trio were in the Callville Bay area while one man was floating in the lake on an inflatable raft and the other two were in the boat, authorities said.

The two men in the boat jumped in the water to help pull the man on the raft in, but they soon realized the raft and boat had floated away, rangers said.

Shortly thereafter, one of the men who jumped from the boat, later identified as Aguirre-Martinez, began shouting to his friends that he was tired and needed help, then they didn't hear him anymore, officials said. Aguirre-Martinez wasn't wearing a life jacket when he jumped into the water, officials said.

Not uncommon when people decide to swim from an unanchored boat. The wind can push a boat along faster than most people can swim. This really holds true for inflatables which fly along the water like a goose feather in the wind.

why do you think this doesnt sound unusual?

Also doesn't sound like any of them were strong swimmers. Happens every summer, folks who can't swim very well go out in the water without wearing their jacket.

I swim well and don't like to jump in without a life jacket. Things change too quickly and it's always best to err on the side of caution.

Pretty tough to do any swimming with a life jacket on, which is why we don't normally have them on unless our intention is to just sit and float. Unfortunately we get a lot of folks each year who cannot swim well who drown like the guy in the article.

People just need to know their limitations, taking mother nature into account. Strong swimmer or not, mother nature is far and away stronger.

Tragic story though, call it negligence, stupidity or whatever, its still tragic, thoughts and prayers to the family

just seems strange to me,this person has been boating mead for a long time, why would 2 men jump in to pull in one guy on a inflatable? I was at the launch ramp at about 9pm when about 5 emergency vehicles appeared and a boat was heading in from the main lake with a woman onboard,i cant explain the sounds coming from this woman but i can say that anyone who has ever lost someone very very close to them, would reconize these cries of utter most pain.I can say that i heard some of the things she was saying on her phone, later speaking about the boat wouldnt start or something, then that there was one screaming, then all three were screaming.I really feel bad for him and his family and friends,i hope i dont make anyone mad posting this.I just think we can all learn from this, and will make us safer boaters in the future.

something to think about... out swimming in the middle of no where, long ways to the shore. You, the strong swimmer, and your buddy, with the life jacket, are both jumping off. Now the wind comes up and you can't get to the boat, guess who survives? (keep in mind you just did 200 meters of the fastest swimming you could muster to try and get to your boat, so you are also now completely winded...)

Being a strong swimmer just gives you the confidence to get in over your head.

people panic and jump overboard to save someone in distress, usually the worst solution and often fatal for both. But it's almost instinctive. This is why it's important to study events like these in advance, and plan your emergency response. For example, if someone is drifting away from an anchored boat and is in trouble, you untie the anchor and abandon it, not pull it up.

This is also why your throwable device has to be in arm's reach at all times.

Leaving a rope trailing, tied to a float, is a smart thing to do when swimming off a boat.

i should say, stop wondering on things sometimes life hands you lemons for lemonade and other times it hands you limes for coronas. you cant ask god why he puts a nail into a 4 day old tire sometimes things happen and sometimes its not what you want. like i've always been told want in one hand and **** in the other see what one fills up faster.

but then again some of you may call me a cold heartless human being, i didnt know him and i wont there for his death has no affects on me.

Excellent post! one of the first rules to being a Life Guard, never go in the water without your floatation!!

I think that anyone who has ever been involved in search and rescue or search and recovery operations, especially ones with tragic endings, has felt the same feelings.
