I just realize that the 17'8" tri hul I am restoring does not have the Hull Identification Number on the transom. There have been some repairing on the transom in the area where the number should have been. I have the titel, but the identification number on the titel is only 7 digits and the hull id # should be 12 digits. How can I figure out what the hull ID# is?
It was described in the papers I got when I got the new title, that "No person shall operate on the waters of this state a vessel for which the department of highway safety and motor vehicles has issued a certificate of title or which is required by law to be registered, unless the vessel displays the assigned hull identification number required by the United S.... bla bla bla....The hull identification number must be carved, burned...bla bla..to the outboard side of the transom....."
It sounds like those guys mean it :) What do I do?

MikeMike,

If the state issued a title with only seven digits, it's their problem not yours. Your title is the insurance that you have that you're doing everything on the up and up.

If the manufacturer is still around, a call or letter to them may answer your questions.

mike ,all you need to do is put the hull # that is on the title onto an aluminum tag and attach to the starboard corner of the transom and you will be legal .i have heard that it should be riveted on but not really sure on this. pre 73 ser#were not 12 digits

JOHNKC, Bingo! That's the answer. My boat is a 1972 and I found this site with hull ID information: http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html. The HIN (Hull Identification Number) is not required on boats manufactured before November 1, 1972.
We learn every day, don't we :)

BTW, here's a link to all states boating regulations: http://www.boatus.com/onlinecourse/states/

Regards
Michael Michaelsen http://www.mitechtrading.com
