shoot don't ask this question on John's Old Mercury forum.......they are big on recommending aviation fuel. I personally have tried 89 and 87, but didn't notice a difference. Dhadley, they think Champs are sucky sparkplugs too as well as gas less than premium.

I would stick to what OMC recommends.

Merc guys would think that of champions.......their plugs of choice are NGKs. Johnnyrude engines on the other hand don't like them.

OMC engineers designed the motors to run on 87 octane and Champion plugs. It's not a matter of "better" plugs or gas, it's a matter of what's better for the outboard motor as designed. Run fresh 87 octane gas and Champion plugs in your OMC's. Run whatever the Merc experts say to use in your Merc's. Those old boys with the slide rules and pocket protectors and "high water" pants that designed the Merc and OMC motors were GOOD. Follow the designers' specs and your outboard will live forever and perform beautfully. Deviate from the factory specs only if you are a bonifide outboard performance specialist out to win the race and longevity be damned.

Octane Schmoctane!!! Alcohol is an outboard's enemy. That's how most higher octane fuels get the additional octane, alcohol. You have a 2-stroke that needs the oil mixed with the gas. Oil doesn't mix with alcohol worth a crap.
