Hello again,

I have a '70 80HP merc 800 with Thunderbolt ign. ser#2881497. I have repaired all my internal and external wiring harness wires...... I've been told by a mechanic that I probably should have cut out the plug, and hard wired my external wiring harness to the appropriate places in the motor, just to avoid any shorts that may have existed in the original plug. I checked the coil and switchbox, they both seem to read what the Clymer's manual say ( that manual doesn't have my exact engine listed, so I went to the closest thing.... I think the tests should still be the same.( I hope) The rectifier is bad, but I figure I can change that easily when I get spark back.

Sorry about so much background, Here's my question. It looks like the problem is with the Trigger, I've been told by several people that the trigger was the weak spot in this motor, but I don't see anything in my manual about changing it. You would think that if it was a weak spot, that it would be referred to in the manual. How hard is it? Is it something that I can test before I tear apart the distributor ( something I would rather avoid if possible )? Is there another thing you could think that would be causing my lack of fire? I think I'm running out of options. Hellllp!

Thanks
Bob
