1980 80HP 4 cyl Mercury. A little background. Several weeks ago My engine was not charging. I determined that the problem was the stator. Replaced the stator and it had been running very well and charging. Have had it out about 7 times since changing the stator. Last time out was Friday and it ran very well without any problems. Well, something changed. Took it out this morning. It started right up but didn't seem to run as fast as it had been, out of gear and the lever all the way forward. I then put it in gear and it wouldn't rev very much. Seemed to be running on all four but just not very fast. I could get about 7 mph. I checked the gas flow right up to the fuel pump, while pumping the bulb and there was plenty. Screen at fuel pump was clean also. Checked 2 of the carbs that I could see and they are opening all of the way. Choke seems to be operating OK as well. Pulled one of the plugs and it was not fouled or too wet. Checked all of the simple stuff, now I need some suggestions please.

Thanks, Darryl

Re: Mercury problems

Thanks, I'll give that board a try. I am also going to do some more investigating on the engine and try to run a few more tests to see if I can figure out what is wrong.

D.

Re: Mercury problems

Sounds like you lost a cylinder. Checking one cylinder for spark is not enough. Check for spark on all cylinders individually..... :)
