Hello,
I have a mercury 175 Sport jet (2.5L merc block) that I just finished rebuilding. It's got all new gaskets, rings, pistons, crank was polished, carbs rebuilt, etc. I have the motor timed at 2 ATDC for idle and 22 BTDC for max advance and I am running at 25:1 premix (with no oil injection) for break in.
The problem I have is the motor will not idle. If I advance throttle a hair out of neutral, I can get it to hold 1000 RPM's fairly nicely, but if I follow the lync and sync instructions in the manual I end up with the motor trying to run at about 600 RPM's then dying.
I have tried to advance the mix screws forward and back (from a base of 1.5 turns out) and didn't get any change. I have had the idle timing anywhere from 6 BTDC to 6 BTDC, and it was smoother closer to 0, but it still didn't idle. I pulled the reeds and have a few that are about 0.006 gab, but all are within the 0.02 spec. Replaced all the vacuum lines with new hose. No change...
I can set the idle screw so the cam is pushing the throttle open, but that isn't inline when the manual (have the throttle cam marker in the center of the roller).
Any ideas?
