I'm getting ready to buy a new 25 hp. The motors around here in Austin seem to be close to the same price. Not sure about elsewhere. I will be putting it on a 14' x 36" jon boat. The two motors weigh about the same. I will use it some in saltwater, but primarily freshwater. Also, I might upgrade to 16 ft. boat next year, and would like to use the same motor. What would be the better buy?

Here's links to the engine specs for both motors. The only major difference I noted was that the Merc. has a higher gear ratio. (2.25:1 vs. Tohatsu 1.92:1)

http://www.tohatsu.com/outboards/25.html
http://www.mercurymarine.com/cgi-bi...dibedcfececjf.0

Ahoy, JZ.

The Tohatsu has a good reputation and is usually less expensive, but I haven't seen a Tohatsu Dealer that offered service. . .anywhere.

For that reason alone, I would go for the Merc.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

There's a dealer here in Austin that offers service as well. I can get the Tohatsu with electric start for about the same price as Mercury without electric start. Are there any noticable differences in speed and power between the two?

JZ,

Check out the 25 hp. shootout in Bass And Walley boats magazine. The Tohatsu did very well. The 25 Tohatsu can also be made into a 30 hp. by simply removing the restrictor plate behind the carburetor-after the warranty of course.
I believe you can link to Bass And Walley boats mag. by going to: www.trailerboats.com.

JZ! I live in Austin also and did what you'er going to do this year in March(ie;upgraded my boat to a new 25HP Merc. short shaft with electric start)
I loved this motor but got a great deal on a 17' Spectrum so I sold my little boat with the old motor.
I got what you need and will sell it VERY reasonable! It still has 4 months of factory warrenty (that is transferable) with an additionale 4 years that can be purchased.
I may have 6 hours on this engine and it is in pristine shape.
email me at:
dmessy@ev1,net
;)
