I have a 1984 Mercury outboard motor that has most of the skeg broken off and the gears inside the lower unit are exposed . It still shifts and it will still run but will not hold oil in lower unit..(it is a very large hole ). I have been looking for a replacement lower unit but they are very expensive. Can I but only the housing for this lower unit (without gears and bearings) or will any other lower units fit this motor?
thank you

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

Ya might get an answer to yer question, if ya noted WHAT motor ya got....

Mercury built motors from a horse or two, to a couple hundred horses that year ya know...

Of course you are correct. This motor is a 1984 150 hp Black Max motor .. I also have a 1992 150hp 2.0 liter black max on a 1996 procraft boat and could use the motor for parts but the 1984 150 seems to run perfectly on ear muffs.( I have never had it in the water. it was like this when I purchased it) so I hate to use it only for parts and would like to repair this motor.
sorry for the inadequate earlier post

Yes you can buy a housing and transfer the internals, but you will have to re-shim the backlash and pinion height.

This is a 1984 Mercury 150 hp Black Max motor serial # 5072422. The gears in the lower unit is fine but the housing is junk. Will a 1992 150 Black Max lower unit ( 2.0 liter ) fit this motor? Where can I purchase only a lower unit for this motor? thank you in advance

Lower units are a dime a dozen on Ebay....be careful on buying someone's junk...$300-$500 all day long

Re: mercury lower unit

Before I spent $500 on used one I would add a few to it and get a NEW one.
