Have a fair bit on at the moment but will get back to you in the next couple of days with a aprox year. To double check your s/number remove the cowl and look for a silver welch plug. It has a number pressed into it which should be the same as the number you just quoted me.

If Laddies sees this, he will know.

Meantime, I think you have not got the full number.

Here is a link to Mercury (Marinepower Europe) serial number / age document which might help when you get your full number. Great motor by the way!

Hope this helps

The brown trim should make it a 1984 or 5 but the serial number needs 7 digits if it starts with a 9 it was built in Belgium and the second digit would be a 0

Well...that is newer than '84 for sure. That cowling is not brown, but is burgundy/red. I'm betting 1985-89 4cyl Classic 50 (45hp)

Post that serial number on the transom bracket tag, and we can confirm for sure.

HI ALL

thanks again for all your info and help

I have checked the number again the last few figits are missing/inelegable. There is no markings on the core plug under the cowl either.

Now we know its age range can anybody tell me if its oil injected via a seperate tank etc as its says on one of the covers 45HP oil injected. Im not sure if this is a replacement cover or the original you see.

Thank you

Your block has a serial number stamped in either the top near the exhaust cover or the sides of the mating surfaces of the crankcase halves, near then top

As Laddies mentioned earlier, the partial serial number you listed indicates that motor was built in Belgium (are you in Europe?).

1988 45hp motors started with s/n 9506022 & up

I'd say it is a safe bet to call it a 1987 45hp (4cyl) motor.

The oil inection system for that motor would have been mounted in the boat (Mercury Autoblend). They are not known to be very reliable in comparison with the newer oil systems, and may have been removed by a previous owner. You'd be best to just mix your fuel yourself (50:1) with that motor.

Good luck.
