The carbs have springs on the butterfly's to close them. But it sounds like the linkage is hanging up somewhere.. Try grabbing the link bar that links all 3 carbs and moving it up and down to see if its binding or something is catching on it, What I would do in the next test would be to remove that Link bar ( it just snaps off the ball on each carb ) and see if it idles normal with that removed. ( This will let each carb close fully )

I think that is what it is when I moved the bar up an down a couple times and when it first started it sounded the best it has. I can definitely see that the linkage is tight when I move it into reverse it gets tough. I am not sure if I am going to continue at this point without taking to the shop but I really appreciate all of the help.

I had the same problem once on that exact engine, 2002 model. I was diddling with the linkage on muffs in the driveway and had the engine running. I think I got the timing too far advanced and it started pre igniting and ran away....turned the key off and it kept on running.....pre ignition doing the firing. Tach peg is 7k rpm and it buried the needle, so I don't know how many rpms it was turning. Ran like that for what seemed forever; maybe a couple of minutes. I had the fuel line hard wired to the engine so I couldn't starve it to death. Don't remember now how I got it stopped.

But it didn't hurt anything. That was 2-3 years ago and still running fine.

On oil consumption, your tank holds 3 quarts. At a 1:50 mix you burn 50 quarts of fuel to 1 quart of oil. 50 quarts/4 quarts per gallon = 12 gallons of fuel per quart of fuel....aka pint to 6 gallon mix if premixed. The oil pump in that engine runs 1:50 (commonly referred to as 50:1....50 gas to 1 oil) at the higher rpms. At idle it starts off at like 1 part oil to 80 gallons of fuel (80:1). Runs a leaner mix as less oil is required buy the engine to maintain itself at the lower rpms.....environmental hygiene thing.

Carb butterflies should be able to manually open them and they spring back easily. The timing gets advanced before they get opened. That's why you don't see them opening instantly.
