--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder if anyone has any idea's.I bought a second hand mercury 500 50hp pullstart engine it had been standing for a few years but had been stored indoors.Got it home and got it started but found it was running rough, traced this to a broken wire at the switch box ,fixed this and it started first pull and idled fine. Fitted it to my boat tried it several times over the next couple of weeks while I sorted the rest of the boat out and it always started fine. Got it in the water started great, tick over was perfect ,took the boat out for a run and everything was fine for about 15 minutes then I noticed it wasn't picking up as fast as it was and didnt have quite as much go.Reduced the revs to idle and it cut out but started up first pull.Decided to head back ,got us back ok but definate lack of power. Put the ears on to flush it out and it was a real pain to start had to have the throttle half open to get it to start and it was running rough but managed to flush it out ok. Just been down to it today when I got there found the engine was siezed, freed it off quite easily fitted new plugs ,checked it had a spark but it would not start removed a plug from time to time to check if they were oiling up but they were all dry(When I took the old plugs out earlier one of them looked very slightly rusty).Checked the carbs and found both float chambers full up.Have taken the carbs off to rebuild them but have not found any blockages etc,Any suggestions?????????

Re: Mercury 500 trouble

It sounds like the inlet needles are stuck causeing the engine to flood

Dont think its that, as i tried to start it for about 10mins and plugs were still dry. Also have stipped one carb down already and the needle seats fine.I mentioned that the float chambers were full to make it clear that the engine was primed and ready to start

I assume you put a new waterpump impeller in when you bought it...?

Re: Mercury 500 trouble

Please tell me you did and that the pee stream was ok or you might have heat-seized it. :(
I'd start with a compression check.

Re: Mercury 500 trouble

might sound a bit silly but check the inlet valve on your fuel tank if its closed the tank will be trying to suck the fuel back into its self, it wont be able to but it wont let any out at the same time ( so your float chambers will still be full ) also check your fuel line - push in the male needle and prime the line, fuel should come out.

Re: Mercury 500 trouble

I need to check the compression, there was water flowing from the pee pipe.I must admit i did suspect the fuel line at first as i had fitted a new tank and an inline filter, but the engine ran for at least 10-15 minutes before i noticed a loss of power so fuel must have been flowing. Also when i had the float bowl off the top carb on saturday i pumped the primer and fuel came out of bottom of the carb.

Re: Mercury 500 trouble

I would try getting rid of that inline filter-maybe starving your motor of fuel and lube.

Re: Mercury 500 trouble

I have the same engine and I started my problem solving by replacing the fuel pump(diaphragm) and then taking off the two carburators and cleaning them in carb cleaner(soaked all the metal parts overnight) then installed a carb kit that one can get from many sources.

Alex
