Mercruiser audio alarm problems

I just bought a new to me 2004 Rinker with a Mercruiser 350 Mag. The audio alarm warning isn't working right and behaving strangely. If the key is on (engine running or not running doesn't matter) the beeper makes a very faint beeping sound. Not continuous but a steady and very faint beep, beep, beep. you can hardly hear it unless you listen close.
I removed the beeper thinking it was defective. I connected it directly to a 12v battery. It then produced a very loud beep, beep, beep, beep. Not a steady tone.
So, the beeper must work but it doesn't produce a steady tone. The manual says it should make a steady tone for low oil pressure or high temperature and make the beep, beep for low drive oil.
I have no idea why it gives a continuous week beep, beep when running or when the key is just one. When the boat was running the temp and oil pressure gauges read just fine and the drive lube container isn't low.

Shouldn't it beep strong and continuous when I have the key on but not started the engine yet because of no oil pressure? Would the lube bottle switch prevent that?
