Mercruiser 165HP inline 6 Timing setting???

Gotta headcase from a guy, cleaned up the fuel delivery system, pump, anti-siphon valves, rebuilt carb, now trying to set the timing to what manual says is supposed to be 10Deg BTDC but cannot, seems to run much smoother set much more advanced than that. I have seen some comments here saying the advance should be set to 20 or 21 degrees??? Is that correct?? what's the best way to set this up so the engine runs smooth and clean. My gut says get it to idle smooth and run steady without hesitation throughout RPM range and ignore the 10 deg BS. Comments??? How can I confirm 20/21 degrees with no timing marker?? I don't know where you heard that 20 or 21 degrees BTDC is better than 10, but you better forget it.
It will run properly at 10° BTDC, if it doesn't there is something wrong that is preventing it. Find the real problems don't just cover it up with some foolish timing adjustment.

Maybe you heard that 21° is the max advance at full RPM. Not sure what it is supposed to be on your engine.

You need to buy an advance timing light, set the engine at 10° and then verify that the distributor advances to the propper advance at full RPM.

Thanks for the comments, it is my intent to get it right the first time hense my inquiring in the first place. Want to ensure the timing is supposed to be 10 degrees. I have been adjusting the carb idle higher and then slowly turning the distributor towards the 10 degree timing marker. I suspect the carb was not set right and is affecting the timing. Please keep you thoughts/comments comming in I appreciate the input.
