Merc Wont Rev Past 4500 rpm.

2000 model 50hp 4 stroke merc. Went out today and all was well. I was heading heading back to the ramp cruising along about 5300rpm and then all the sudden the engine dropped to 4500 rpm and would not go past there. It felt just like the throttle was lifted but it wasnt. I stopped and the motor idled fine then i tried to take off and it still wouldnt go past 4500.
Any ideas?
I was having some idle overheating problems. So I replaced the impeller and thermostat recentley but thats about it.

For those who care,It was a clogged jet on Number 3 cylinder. Cleaned the carb and all is well agin. Thanks for all the help.

i care i just dont know much about a 4 stroke other then a Briggs and Stratton
