Merc 50hp 4 cylinder - age and reputation please ?

Question please

Mercury Blueband 50 hp 4 cylinder serial no 9207299 (thunderbolt ignition)
Firstly how old is it, I would say 1979 is that accurate

Secondly, are they any good, is there a common fault with them and what are they like for parts

Yes, it is a 79 4 cyl 50HP built in Belguim with ADI ignition, it don't get any better than that. A bullet proof engine.

Hi Eddy, the thunderbolt ignition is an electronic system which is very reliable and once set up tends to stay that way ,the older engine had a distrubitor which is much more prone to going out of sync and is much less reliable.Great engine as long as you look after it it will look after you. I think i have same motor. What sort of fuel to oil ratio should be used?
