Merc 15 hp 4 stroke : PLEASE HELP

the motor ran fine in idle on earmuffs and in the water. when i took it out off the dock and gave it some juice, it was ok for a minute then sputtered and then died. when i pulled the cord it would turn over briefly then die. i could only keep it going by keeping the choke pulled out! PLEASE HELP

I would say you need to look at your carb it sounds like it's glued up on these four strokes the jets are Very small and it does not take much to stop them up i would rebuild soak and make sure all passages are free from varnish carb cleaner will eat any rubber so you will need a new kit for the rebuild a must
