merc 115 lower unit issues pls help!!

hello all hope everyones day is going better than mine....i have a merc 115hp belive it is a 1980 motor if not its a 1985......having problems with the lower end unit seems to be stuck in reverse and wont come out of it it has been taken off the motor and still cant get it to budge...is there a way to take it apart and see if we can figure out the problem or anything at all we can do to try and get it to move any help would be greatly apprciated!!

C-M, The LU are a bit tricky for backyard mechanics. Reverse is a bit of an odd gear to be stuck in. Does the LU have gear oil? Will the shift shaft turn at all? The only way to disassemble the LU is to pull the donut shaped retainer (behind the prop), and pull the bearing carrier, with a puller.

I had a go at pulling my lower unit down a few's weeks ago. Let me asure you it was not a fun exercise! My motor has seen a lot of salt water over the years which made the carrier seize to housing. the rest of it come apart fairly easy though..
