Same basic boat, Same basic issues as "Jay"! Thanks to him the demo job was a lot easier and the repair work should go better also.

History:

Noticed ski locker hatch getting mushy and started tearing up the carpet and saw that the stringer and deck in that area was a mess. I took up the area around the seats and just left it for the winter.
A friend convinced me to get working on it, so I did a search and found Jay's YouTube video's and also iboats.com. Both have been invaluable!

Where I'm at now:

My Stringers were toast from the bow to just behind the motor mounts, I removed all the stringers, Motor mounts, foam and deck.

My first of many questions:

Do I need to do anything with the transom?

Here is a bad video of what I'm asking

Welcome to iBoats!

Do a core sample on the Transom and you will know for Sure if it is bad or not.

Welcome to i-boats, Same as above, do some exploratory drilling into the transom and you"ll know for sure. No need not to do it if you've dived in this far already.

Also, when I put my stringers in how dry does the wood need to be- here in the NW is is hard to get wood less then 13-15% outdoors.

1/4" drill bit, 3/4" deep, down low around the keyhole and around the edges and then about a foot up from the hull. light tan dry shavings GOOD dark brown wet BAD

What kind of WOOD are you using. AC Ext. Grade FIR Plywood should be fine. Buy it know get it in the Garage and let it acclimate.

Welcome aboard. I am glad that we got you here. Do you have any pictures of the exterior of the boat? As far as the transom goes, mine looked the same. the rot was more concentrated around the drive hole. Until you get the transom plate off, you will not know for sure. It might be easier to just rip it all out. A transom is not really that hard.

Well, I thought I would give a an update- the transom seem to be just fine, all test holes had light tan shavings. I drilled the bottom and middle each side. I guess I'll just glass in the exposed areas and call it good.

I also looked at the hour counter when I pulled it out during the demo- it had only 168 hours on it! That is practically a new engine!

Would it be prudent to take the Gimble housing out and and glass the exposed wood or should I just apply some resin to it?

Does anyone have experience with "Fiberlay" products? I live in the Seattle area and need a good, cheap source for materials.

Also, sorry to hear about Jay's mom passing away. I lost both my father and father-in-law this year. Its not an easy time for him right now.

Is there any reason not to use 2x material for the stringers instead of plywood? I think it would add extra weight but I wouldn't have to add a piece to the top side of the plywoood and it would be a lot easier to glass in.

I'm not an I/O guy so I don't know about the gimbal stuff. If you use 2x I would strongly suggest Douglas FIR. It has excellent water/rot resistance and is used in boat building all the time. If Properly glassed it will be there for decades. Not sure I understand your comment about having to add a piece to the top side of the plywood?????

Thanks woodonglass- I had some 2x12's laying around but I don't know the species (they look like Hem-fir).
About the piece on the topside of the plywood- the original had a 2x2 next to the plywood at the top. Frisco also did this to his restoration, I thought the 2x12 might make it easier. The 2x12's are older and have been outside for a while so they might be to wet to use.

Make sure you test the transom at the bottom. That is where I had my issues. As far as wood goes, just use the plywood, and make it 3/4". It is better than hardwood.
