I just purchased a 1973 Silverline with a 165 HP Mercruiser. I have the original manual which recommends using SAE 30 oil for the crankcase and doesn't mention any oil filter #.

Jumping ahead to 2012, what is the best weight oil to use and what # oil filter is recommended?

Thanks

I just use an oil filter for a GMC 250 CID truck or El-Camino, (FRAM - PH30). K&N makes a nice filter too, but spendy. Manual says chage oil every 100 hours, or 60 days which ever comes first in temps above 50 F, so I don't get too attached to them. The manual says you can substitute automotive oil for the Quicksilver if you stick with a straight wieght oil. I run SEA30 in my 1976 Mercruiser 165 inline 6, and never had a problem.

Hope that helps.

I have the same engine...I run Shell Rotella T Sae30W and a NAPA Gold filter. $12 or so for a gallon/$9 for the filter.

You may want to pick up a few bottles of lead substitute feul treatment while your at NAPA.

Not sure about the best 2012 oil to use. There are lots of 'high milage' synthetics and blends and such, but I've never used them in an engine that wasn't new enough to be feul injected. Today's 'high performance' additives and such I've found to be really rough on these otherwise sturdy, dependable motors. I gave up and just give the motor what it was designed for. The same goes for feul, it sours fast now days, so I treat my feul.

Anybody else have anything on the new synthetics?

I was looking for a filter #, not a filter brand.

Great. I use WIX oil filters in all my vehicles.
I think the answer should of been Part No: Mercuiser 35-866340K01. I just bought a 1974 Mercuiser Bowrider boat, for which I am restoring. The boat has an Offenhauser 165 HP inline 6 cylinder, and the oil filter is a Mercuiser 35-866340K01. I validated that it was the correct filter.

Strange though, the oil filter is almost twice as long as the modern Mercuiser 35-866340K01 oil filter. There are cross reference sites where you can find other equivalent brands.
