Ok guys heres the deal... I have a mariner 40 magnum.Seems like I have done everything except completely rebuild the carbs.I have took them off new gaskets and inspected and everything looked clean.Heck I even got the motor to run for a very short period once. But before I go buy these kits, I want to make sure im on the right track with this thing.Could clogged jets be the culprit. It gets fuel from tank to carbs but seems like no gas from there back.It passed compression and spark test.Just need some insight on the problem.

Re: Mariner Carb Problems

This may seem stupid but I bought a mint 40hp 1997 Merc to sell...When a buyer came over I started it since I had just mounted it on my stand from the pallet it came on and the motor ran like crap...I was taken back as the motor was like new...did the compression check for the guy and both cylinders were at 149 exactly...well looking at the fuel filter, somebody had put it on backwards...so I took the oil tank off to gain better access to turn the filter around..not sure why but as I started to put the oil tank back on, I thought about the idle mixture sku's as they were staring at me.. I checked the top one and idle mixture screw was out about 1 1/2 turn from closed which was fine...Went to the bottom carb and someone had it totally closed.. I open it the same 1 1/2 turn and the motor started and ran like a brand new motor....this is a long shot for you but make sure the idle mixture screws are set correctly or it will not run right at idle..

Check the floats are not saturated and needle seat assembly is working.May be getting stuck open or shut.I'd pull carbs apart and give a good soaking in carb cleaner.tiny channels and crevices that you can't see could be clogged.

Re: Mariner Carb Problems

ok found out the plugs wires in the wrong order today. Its Now wanting to start seems like it has enough power now but it'll spit and sputter and never really get going kinda like backfires but i would say its a missfire<--(not sure how to explain it exactly).it kinda sounds like if it ever gets going and just burns up some of that crud itll be fine.Im going to try to mess with the idle mix screw and see if that has anything to do with it,as soon as finish my sandwich.

Re: Mariner Carb Problems

I believe the floats are plastic and don't get saturated....check idle mixture before taking off the carbs...was a quick fix for me...I did just sell another 40h.p. and rebuilt the carbs is why I know they are plastic...in order to get to the needle and seat you have to knock the pin holding the float out...The bad news is that I broke one of the arms holding the pin for the float so it took me a number of weeks to find a carb on Ebay as I ruined the one on the motor...Talked to my dealer and his mechanics have done the same thing so be very careful...Don't know why the pin is tappered and must be knocked out with an exact fitting punch...just my o2......
