magnets on a 1976 85 horse evinrude.

It seems that the magnets on this engine have lost their magnetism.Are these magnets replacable or must my brother in law buy another flywheel?If they are replacable,does anybody know a part#??<br />Thanks in advance.

Have you removed the flywheel?

I am told by phone that the flywheel was removed and it seems to my brother in law that the magnets were part of the cast.I do think that they can be removed,because that is the way with most of these magnets.

I don't know what you meant by that statement but if the magnets are protruding from the inner circumfrance of the flwheel, I'm 90% sure there is a magnet and glue kit available. Service manual would be handy as for how to space them evenly. Might be that this model engine needs the sensors cleaned and adjusted...kinda like points

My Clymer book covers 1973-1990, 48-235hp motors, 2,3,4, and 6 cylinders. It states the charging system on all models consists of permanent magnets CAST in the flywheel. They probably won't come out any time soon.

The magnets on that 1976 85hp are what is called permanent magnets, meaning it is impossible for them to lose their magnetism qualities.<br /><br />What exactly is the problem that the engine has encountered that makes you think that the flywheel magnets are at fault?

A quickie test to see if the magnets are OK is to loosely dangle a screwdriver in your finger tips and slowly move toward each magnet. The magnetism should "pull" the screwdriver to it when it is within about 1" or so of the magnet.

By now it turns out that the info my brother in law gave is well off target.It is a 1982 85 horse.And he does not really know what he is talking about.I'll visit him tomorrow and see for myself.<br />I'll probably start another thread when I have the analyses of the problem.<br />I really appreciate your suggestions.
