I was looking into buying a boat equipped with a 1988 OMC Sea Drive. The engine was advertised with a new powerhead. To make a long story short, the previous owner had tried to change the water pump but could not get the lower unit seperated from the engine. In the end, it was found that the drive shaft had frozen into the power head. In order to get the engine apart, the dealer pryed the lower unit apart & cut the drive shaft. Upon re-assembly with a new powerhead, shaft ect. , you could see daylight where the lower unit bolts up to the rest of the engine. When the dealer put the muffs on the engine to start it on land, water was pouring from the joint. I ended up walking away shaking my head after hearing the answers the salesman gave me when I asked about the problem.
To satisfy my own curiosity, was I seeing intake water or exhaust water flowing from this joint?

Re: Lower Unit Water Leak

most likely exhaust water. If it was warm.
Have done that to motors myself and am going to do it to one next wk. I cut a hole in the mid-section to cut the shaft so the mateing surface doesn't get messed up.
corm
