Lower Unit seal kit?

Now that I have my 1960 Lark 2 all fixed and up and running, I want to make sure there are no issues with it. I did notice last season when running it after I replaced the impeller, I was getting some gear oil leakage from what appears to be the exhaust, and I'm sure water is getting in the lower unit oil somehow. Is there a kit or a listing of all the seal/gaskets that go in the lower unit so I can get them all and replace everything at once so I don't have to worry about it?

Re: Lower Unit seal kit?

The gear box of that era had an upper and lower section (which was removable) sealed with an Oring gasket that was a cut to fit kind of thing in a U shape. Problem I had with them was getting them cut to exactly the right length to ensure the seal. Not a fun job so good luck.

Don't know about a kit, but I would suspect that they exist.....too many of those engines manufactured to not have replacement parts and a kit just makes sense as there are several pieces to replace in the repair process.

I don't know about your area, but here in north Texas, Napa Auto Parts carries a lot of older parts like impellers and seal kits in the Sierra brand. Bill.

Lark 2 is a 40hp, correct?

Anyway, they have the Sierra lower unit gearcase seal kit right here on iboats for a manual shift. You have to confirm what you have.

40 (Manual Shift) 1960-1973
part# 18-2686

Also, don't skimp on the sealer. Buy the 3M Scotch-grip #847. Not likely to find it on store shelves, you have to buy online.

Be sure of water intrusion. First, have the motor stood up for awhile and drain gearcase. If no water, or cloudy, you have exhaust residue or somethin' on the waterpump, and no need to re-seal. Use new drain plug gaskets upon re-fill. And I just got christmas-carroled by 6th graders at my bait shop.. Cool. Merry christmas!
