I'd like to know the difference too! How high is high?
I think we need to know what "High Viscosity" means to lubrimatic before I'd use it.....

When all else fails, and in doubt, go with what the OEM recommends....

I'm with Schematic. Use the one recommended by manufacturer.

Do not use any oil unless it is made for marine use. As I have mentioned before, automotive gear lubes do not have the anit-foaming agents. The gear cases of outboards do not have the space to take up all the foam.

Re: lower unit oil types

From what I understand, the High Vis. is for Modern Outboards. The Hypoid 90 is for some older outboards and most Sterndrives. Type "C" is For outboards and stern drive units with "electric" lift mechanisms. As for Viscosity, I have no Idea what "Weight" they are, except that I do know that Hypoid 90 is heavier than the standard High Viscosity. '90 is something you would use in a differential in a car! What I do know is that I have always used Lubrimatic High Viscosity in the Boats that I've owned and never had a lower unit problem. I also use there T&T fluid, with good results. I guess it's OK! Use what you are comfortable with or you will be forever asking "What If", when it breaks!

80 or 90 weight is quite common for LU's. Type "C" is lighter in weight.

But "High viscosity"......well thats pretty subjective!

Re: lower unit oil types

Thanks for the input guys. Its all clear as mud now. Both of these oils are sold on the iboats site. Both have pictures of lower units on them. Neither says type C.

What constitutes a "modern" outboard?

As for the manual recommendation, I'm still trying to locate an owners manual. Local Merc dealer says they are not available. Have ordered a Clymer shop manual, but it hasn't arrived yet.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that the water is getting harder lately? I heard that it will be hard as rock in about 6 weeks. Guess its almost time to put the vessel away and get out the sled.
